I will be travelling to Samoa soon, Yet it looks like I will be needing a VPN service with an NZ exit server. As Samoa is not supported by Google Play Music. And there will probably be other apps that will be geoblocked from Samoa also.

Should I just sign up to a paid VPN service? (if so, who would you recommend?) Or should I setup a VPN server using my Edge router lite? and just use it and my UFB connection as a VPN? (I already have a static IP).

You can download the music to your phone as well. You can do that while in NZ, and it will stay cached for a month I believe.

I've just got an OpenVPN server (using PiVPN: http://www.pivpn.io/) running on a docker container on my server. You can also set this up very easily on a Raspberry Pi or anything running Debian/Ubuntu Linux. For a personal VPN I'd recommend doing this. I've just got an OpenVPN certificate on my Laptop + Phone for when I want to VPN back and all traffic / DNS etc is transported over that encrypted connection.

I will definitely be taking some locally saved music. (need it for the plane trip anyway).

Mobile data is cheap enough that streaming isn't a problem. And I already have a paid Google music subscription, so I don't want any stupid geoblocks preventing me from using something that I have already paid for.

Also I don't know if internet banking apps will still work over there without a VPN.

Aren't all the Google geo restrictions just to stop you signing up for a service in a country, not actually prevent somebody who has a service from being able to use it?

I've never come across any app anywhere in my travels that hasn't worked once installed on my phone, this includes things such as banking apps.

I was spottifying in china no problems. Till I was introduced to their local version of it which was free and appeared to not bother with that pesky obtaining rights things so had absolutly everything.

I run OpenVPN on my MythTV box (Ubuntu) for when I am away from home.  It works well.  OpenVPN requires CPU power to do the encryption, so it is better done on a PC with a good CPU, rather than an EdgeRouter which only has a small CPU and will only do relatively low throughput.  OpenVPN can be a bit fiddly to set up, but provides the best available security - it is what most VPN providers now offer.  I have mine set up bridged onto my internal LAN, so I can even do CIFS/SMB networking and just copy files between the remote device and my home network servers and devices as normal, if a bit slower than when local.  I have had this running for many years now without problems.

I'd set up VPN access on your Edge router lite so you can avoid issues with sketchy free wifi!

My Raspberry Pi doesn't even break a sweat when using OpenVPN with an HD stream, so CPU isn't that important.

As for a VPN, if you don't want to roll your own, I use Private Internet Access, they have an exit node in Auckland.

And YouTube Music is not working, just because I'm in Samoa. Yet the normal YouTube app still work. And I can play music videos using that app as well. So the restriction is not to do with copyright restrictions.

In effect, Google is saying that I can't use something that I have paid for, while I'm on holiday.

It's more likely they don't have the rights from the rights holders (music companies) to offer the app in Samoa. I'm guessing the streaming rights are different between the music app and youtube app, which why it works in one not in the other. I had a similar issue in Australia, where some albums could be purchased in Google Play Music, but couldn't be streamed in the same app.

I did this on an oDroid and works well.
