Last night - long story - my son and I went out.  He has a TP-Link AV600 Powerline to enhance his gaming, first unit is connected downstairs at router, 2nd unit is upstairs from power socket to his PC.

Anyway, I unplugged the downstairs Powerline from router and we took it with us.  So downstairs setup remained of fibre to modem to router.  My flatmate and I pick up internet wirelessly from router.

When we got home, my flatmate said he lost internet soon after we left.  My son has said something similar happens at his mothers if this occurs as well.

Doesn't make sense to us as to why this happens.  Modem connects to router.  Flatmate connects to wireless signal.  When we attach the AV600, it connects router to power point, then in his room 2nd unit connects from power point to his PC.  So, we would have thought the Powerline as connected purely and simply connects his PC directly to router via power lines, and not wireless - so why is other wireless in house affected?

thanks

Your flatmate's device is connecting to WiFi but have you confirmed it is to the router? The device would be listed in the DHCP table.

What are the actual model numbers you are using from the AV600 range of products? I ask this because it would make more sense if you have an AV600 with WiFi. When the AV600 was disconnected from the router, WiFi AV600 was either the one removed or the one that now remained but was not conencted. E.g. https://www.tp-link.com/uk/products/details/TL-WPA4226-KIT-V1.2.html

Probably because the AV600 has its access point turned on and your flatmate is connected to this transmission rather than router.

if you have fibre there is no modem involved, there is an ONT and a Router

The TL-WPA4220 is a Wifi unit so this is likely to be the cause of the problem

DHCP is a network protocol which assigns IP addresses to devices connecting to the network. Normally the router is the DHCP server. If you check the DHCP table, which is usually available through LAN status, then you should be able to see which connection is being used to connect to the router.

On my LAN, eth0 is a PC, eth1 is the TV box and eth2 is a switch which connects most other devices; wl0 is the 2.4GHz band; and wl1 is the 5.0Ghz. If I had a Powerline WiFi adapter it would be on eth2 so I would be able to tell whether a device is attaching to WFi directly through the router WiFi or via a Powerline adapter through a cabled connection.
