The new Edgerouters all include SFP ports.

As a matter of interest, could you skip the ISP provided ONT box and run the fibre straight into your router? Would there be any performance gain?

the LFC want to be able to manage the ONT so if you provide it they have no way of managing it.

Nice succinct reply.

Maybe I should have searched more for the older answer.

Thanks anyway.

So an SFP port is useless? Unless you're running your own fibre around your property?

For a home user, yes.

Run fibre patch lead to your switch.

Depends what SFP module you put in it. Drop a copper module in and get another 1 Gb port.

There is something called an SFP ONT, which does provide fibre out but as far as i am aware that is not available to the general public. Sorry.

You can buy a GPON SFP [0], but it's not much good to you as noted.

Chorus did look at doing a SFP based offering, that's only on BS3 plans IIRC though (not consumer pricing at all)

You can use the SFP for a RJ45 port, use it for higher bandwidth uplink to another device, Directly attached copper. Quite a few options...

Probably in due course the 10Gbps service may have an option to link ONT to Router via fibre patch lead perhaps?

Sadly the trial docs seem to be going the copper route although its understandable for 99% of users.

I wonder if someone had the SLID and one of these they could make it work. (I am kidding if you weren't sure)

Hi All,

Can someone help: I got trustpower Fibre installed recently and they given a modem from netcom, can i replace that with Cisco 867VAE?

The way it is working is through IPoE on VLAN 10 tagging, not sure if cisco 867vae is capable to have this config done.

Thanks
Barry

You're better off starting a new thread then tacking on an unrelated question to this thread

You might also want to consider whether the Cisco is even worth using, especially on anything faster than a 100mbit fibre connection
