I bought this switch on Aliexpress. If you scroll down to the product details, you see under Item Specifics that the brand is TP-Link. I had doubts when I bought it. There is nothing on it that suggests TP Link and it doesn't look like any other TP Link switch I have ever seen. But it didn't cost much and I'm not really that bothered.

Now that I have received it, I am more convinced than ever that it is not TP-Link, but I can't be completely sure. Maybe they also sell stuff that is generically branded.

I haven't actually tried the switch yet. I will install it later. I am not questioning the quality of it or whether it works or not, just the fact that it is sold as TP-Link. It actually looks better than other cheap stuff I have had. It even comes with a good, solid AC plug adaptor. But nowhere does TP-Link appear on the packaging or the brief user manual. So what do others think? I would be interested to know.

I personally wouldn't trust anything off Aliexpress that plugs in the wall - they simply don't follow NZ electrical standards.

I'm also a little confused with why you would buy a 100Mbit switch from Aliexpress when 1Gbit switches are cheap locally in NZ - for example, this one: https://www.ascent.co.nz/productspecification.aspx?itemID=375927

Probably because the Ali one is less than half that price even with exchange rate.  Free shipping too.

Plus I have no present or likely future use for a gigabit switch. 10/100 meets my needs.

Hi, it will be a TP-Link knock off, Chinese companies knock off Chinese companies too, not just western ones. Probably identical inside to an equivalent TP-Link with the same Marvell, or whatever basic chip

I generally don't have a problem with items like this that use a wall wart. Big Clive has pulled apart a few on his Youtube channel, and they are (usually) fine.

things that run mains voltages straight into them, however, I would be pretty wary of.

It's not half the price. It's only NZ $20.64 to guy a genuine 8 port TP-Link 10/100 from PB Tech - and that comes with a AS/NZ type approved plug pack with correct plug.

A real TP-Link 10/100 switch in NZ can be had new for around $21 - there is just no point in buying something like that from overseas.

Friends don't let friends buy TP-Link (unless the friend knows you can put a non TP-Link firmware on whatever it is)

Come on now - it's an unmanaged switch. foot-in-mouth

There is no firmware that is modifiable either by the manufacture or by user on most of these unmanaged switches, most have no software driven process normally hardwired state machines.

It's half the price of the one mentioned in Michael's post.

I thought you of all people would appreciate some good semantics.

If you live next door to PB Tech I guess it's only $20 or so. After they tack on all the extra inflated charges for sending it to my rural address, it is about twice that. I don't recall the exact figure but I did look into it. You people are not making fair price comparisons. Shipping from PB Tech is just as outrageous as from Trade Me dealers. With Aliexpress, the quoted price is what you actually pay. Shipping is free. That makes a big difference.

Thank you @cyril7 for actually answering my question.

Ahhh, but thats when you take the opportunity and just keep piling stuff you think you need into your shopping trolley to get the most out of the shipping charges etc, and just hope her in doors doen't notice when the courier turns up.

Anyway, I just hooked it up and it seems to be working fine, not that I expected otherwise. We will see how it goes.
