I'm planning on buying a small cheap PoE gigabit switch.

Really don't need more than 5 ports, where 2 of them have to be PoE.

The PoE ports have to power 2 Access Points (Cambium E410).

I've looked at the Netgear GS105PE.

NETGEAR ProSAFE GS105PE 5-Port Gigabit Web Managed PoE Passthrough Switch with 2 x PoE (Max 19W/7.9W) Switch powered by PoE only

I can easily get hold of a PoE injector to power this switch.

My question is:

The Cambium E410 states: Power Consumed 13W (max)

Does this mean that two access points require 26W and the Netgear GS105PE won't work (as it states max 19W)?

Or would a better choice be theTP-Link TL-SG1005P 5-Port Gigabit Desktop Switch With 4-Port PoE?

Supports PoE Power up to 15.4W for each PoE port

That is correct, its mainly made for where you have existing POE infrastructure and realise that you need 2 things. APs are one of the more power hungry items so I dont think you will find one that will do what you need.

I have used TP link for a cheap one for cameras - but it was only a 100 megabit one. They have the sg1005p now that is gigabit and cheap, with 4 powered ports on it.

Up to 15.4 per port or 56 in total.
That would work for me, right?

Yes, it should do the job and its not managed so you dont have to worry about trash management software like cheap "managed" switches have in them.

If you had been onto it there was a guy selling old POE switches on Geekzone for cheap. Picked myself up three of them and still have a spare SG200-08P which I upgraded but was keeping as a spare in case my main POE switch blows up. Happy to on-sell that to you for the same price I paid ($45) + postage if you're not in Wellington.

Otherwise finding switches with GB ports they don't come up all that often on Trademe or if they do they are the enterprise ones with 48 ports etc.

I have a completely Newbie question on this topic.

I have recently added a second Unifi AP to my network. At the moment the two Unifi are directly plugged into a Huawei router that comes with Spark Fibre Broadband. While this set up works I now have quite a few things plugged into the power extension board (router, ONT, two POEs for two Unifi, two printers that need to be there so to connect to the router). At some stage I may need to add yet another AP which which means yet add another POE to the power extension. For this reason I am thinking about getting a switch with POE so instead of multiple POEs I only have to power one switch.

I have been looking on PBTech site and I think the cheapest that will do the job is the TP-Link TL-SG1005P 5-Port Gigabit Unmanaged PoE Switch with 4-Port PoE (Max 56W). However, as I have Unifi I wonder if I should get the Ubiquiti switch it would be at double the cost. I suspect in a simple home setting a managed switch is probably not necessary, and I can save quite a bit of money going with the unmanaged TP-Link. However, I would like to confirm this is indeed the case, and I would like to know what exactly I would be missing if I go with TP-Link instead of the Unifi?

The unifi switch will let you have the topology view work which is pretty nifty to have when you start to get multiple switches around the place.

It also lets you powercycle the ports via the controller which can be a nice to have rather than have to deal with a "managed" switches terrible user interface.

I did the free video and webinar online for Meraki and got a cloud managed switch and wifi ap on a 3 year free cloud license.

All enterprise kit.. the switch is PoE and the AP g/n/ac is fantastic..

Something along the lines of "well is your company going to buy any AP's? we can't just give you a free AP".

Well it worked for me..

Maybe it worked cos I have my own domain?

However.. I told them I'm in IT and exploring options for work..

They sent both units and I'm using them at home now..
