I have my Orbi RBR 50 connected to the Orcon router as an access point with one satellite and it has been working great for a long time however of late the satellite has began dropping the network. The Netgear App reports that the satellite is not available. I have tried teh following...

1. Ensured all Wifi radios are turned off on the Orcon router to eliminate interference.

2. Repositioned the Satellite and reconnected.

3. Reset the router and  resynced the satellite.

4. Esured the Orbi router and satellite are using the latest firmware.

5. checked signal strength including strength of any neighboring wifi units to eliminate interference.

6. Ensured the units are well ventilated.

7. Ensured the units are not located near devices that could cause interference e.g microwave oven.

Other than that I am at a loss as to what could be causing the issue. I had not made any changes in settings etc before this started. When the satellite reconnects with or without intervention the speed and signal strength is very good. Does anyone have any ideas?

Cheers

Those still arent very common in this community so I would probably just suggest its either dying (could be the master or slave unit backhaul wifi chip) so might need to take it back under warranty.

Hey there,

New firmware overnight, you might want to try out before returning?

I have finally upgraded the Firmware to V2.3.0.32 following the correct proceedure of upgrading the Satellite first then the Router. I rebooted the system after the upgrade. I am still experiencing the Satellite becoming unavailable. I at a loss as to why this behaviour is occuring. I have found no patterns or new influences that have been brought in to cause the bahaviour. I also tried moving the Satellite further away from the router to see if I was putting too much Wifi signal around but this did not stop the behaviour.

As a test, put the sat & master/main/router in the same room for a day or & see if it still drops off then.

I had that idea but thought two strong signals in a small area (router in in our lounge wich is approx 8 meters x 7 meters) would saturate the area with signal and cause issues. @sbiddle or @michaelmurfy maybe able to shed some light

If you've got spare ethernet cable, try using wired backhaul and see if it drops out with that. May help to isolate issue.

One other thought, do you have anything else wired into router, in particular anything like a Sonos system that may be running it's own mesh network?

yes but its called testing, and if its dropping often then you will know quickly that it having not enough signal is not the issue

As mentioned try running  cable between the 2 devices and see if it still drops wifi, if it does still drop on both the above it would be taking it back a faulty

@Jase2985 good point I will give it a try.

I have tested signal strength at the Satellites location (satellite turned off) and it is strong. However this is testing the signal from the 2.5ghz and 5ghz bandwidths from the router however I have no idea how to test the backhaul channel, I have assumed that it is similar to the 5ghz channel. I do have Beam formingturned on if that is significant when looking at this issue.

I tried the Router and Satellite in the same room. Damn that hurt a lot, I must learn to wait until my wife is home and not do that stuff myself. Getting up off the floor was a mission. I digress though, I tried it and still the dopey Satellite dropped off.
I am thinking maybe I should avoid more grief and buy a Google WiFi or Ubiquity Amplifi, however my wife thinks the Ubiquity satellites are butt ugly.

@MikeB4 - This won't be any consolation, but just to let you know I'm also running an Orbi RBR50 with one Satellite configured (via Wi-Fi, not cabled), with firmware v2.2.1.210 and I'm not seeing the Satellite drop-offs that you are.

Want to swap 😀

Its a pain as the Orbi has been rock solid and solved the networking issues we had. Out home is a solid timber home and trying to run wired ethernet is a total pain and my disability makes it impossible for me to even try.
