Hi, I have a network here at work it has a modest number of UniFi AC-Lites and AC-LR APs on it. We also have a cupboard full of older UAP's, the originals.

The network has two SSID's both on seperate vlans, and the AC WAPs work fine, no problems.

But the issue is the UAP's, if I have more than one SSID on them, then the clients will connect, then disconnect after about 10sec and will drift off to a distant AP that is too weak to provide reliable service. If I have just a singe SSID on these older WAPs the client will happily connect and remain so indefinitely with good reliability. Current firmware is 4.0.14.9736, controller is 5.10.17

Anyone else seen this odd behaviour?

Cheers

Cyril

That's interesting. I recently had one where it was just a single UAP (in a doctors waiting area), it's been there for years with two SSID's each on their own respective VLAN.

The second SSID suddenly stopped allowing clients to connect. You would see them come up for a short amount of time in the controller, but with no IP address. Also confirmed, no DHCP lease was getting handed out by the router. I thought it might have just been the VLAN not trunking through properly.

But just to check, connected a UAP-AC-Lite, it will all worked perfectly right away.

Didn't think much more of it as the guy didn't care about buying a new AP. But I still have the old one, will plug it back in and check firmware - perhaps a recent update? My controller is 5.9.29.

So I am not alone in this, good to know :)

There is a latter 4.0.15 firmware for the UAP, its sitting cached in my controller, but I dont seem to be able to push it to the WAP, so not sure whats happening there.

After a couple of years of issues with Unfi Devices including switches and AP's and higher than I'd expect failure rates, we have now banned Uni-Fi on networks we manage.

I have seen issues like this, and I believe that Uni-Fi has major issues related to VLANs in their devices/software.

This is super isolated for me to be honest (across the last 4-5 years installing perhaps 300+ of their differing flavours). I don't like unifi switches or the USG, but really can't fault the AP's for just general wifi deployments. If an AP is no good, it's generally DOA. This particular one has been deployed for just under 5 years, which for a $130 AP I can't fault. It was due for an upgrade anyway.

UniFi failure rates are very high but that's always been on ongoing issue. In the past year I've had 6 out of 180 AC inwalls fail, which is an incredibly high % by and vendor standards.

Going back to the original fault - do you have advanced features enabled? If so is bandsteering enabled?

Hi, Steve, its a single band radio, so clearly that WAP feature set is limited, so band steering is not one, but it is enabled on the other AC waps in the system.

No Min RSSI configured incorrectly on that AP?

Nope in the advanced features for this UAP min RSSI is unticked, Airtime fairness is off. I should point out that I now realise this issue has been existent for sometime, in the past I thought it was a result of blocking services from the very close by prison, but my recent re investigation has focused it back on "more than one SSID" as the cause.
