Hi all,

We have a granny flat which we'd like to extend our (slow ADSL) connection to, and would love some advice on which of these options is the best trade off of cost, reliability, and difficulty. It's about 50m straight line distance, with a driveway in the way. Nearly line of sight, but maybe a little foliage in the way.

1) set up a P2P WiFi link along with a router at the other end to supply WiFi. Is there any reasonably cheap unit that can do both a P2P link as well as act as a wireless ap at the same time to save having a separate AP?
2) Run conduit and cable down to the flat -- would mean either going under a driveway or going "the long way round" which raises questions about max run length etc. Seems to be the most reliable solution and somewhat future proof, but a pita.
3) This is the interesting one... it turns out that our ADSL connection actually goes via the granny flat to the house, so perhaps there is a way to move the modem to the flat and then use the existing copper connection to then have a separate P2P link up to the main house? I guess bandwidth wouldn't be good but the internet link is the limiting factor anyway. Also not sure how this works in terms of equipment. Or maybe try to find where the copper run is and use it to pull Ethernet up to the main house??

Advice much appreciated!

- Fibre with SFPs and media converters.
- Ubiquiti point APs.

Choose one.

I'd probably try the modem at the granny flat. sounds like you would get a better connection there.

Then since the cabling is already there, a VDSL2 bridge at iver end of that now unused bit of cable.

Hi a 60ad link will give you gig speeds and cost around $300 plus a few installation materials.

How much does a VDSL LAN kit cost? We're now not actually sure if the copper goes to the barn first then to the house after or vice versa (doh). Once we find a way to figure that out, considering if sacrificing the unneeded copper by using it as a draw wire for ethernet might be best..

60ad looks impressive, but overkill when our ADSL is around 5/1 and no fibre in sight. Would 2.4Ghz P2P be more resilient? No other networks around asides from our own. I see lots of people use locom2s but would need a separate ap as well right?

PB do them for about 160 each. with this product many have said using a normal modem as CPE works so only 1 would be required. YMMV.

I'd test it. Literally the most basic test you could do.. Take your modem, look at what it's exact line attenuation value is. Plug it in at the other point and see what it reads.

If it's higher, good probability it doesnt go there first.

If it's lower, good probability it goes there first.

This is ofcourse assuming you dont have a master filter installed (which i'd also suggest given your situation)

If you're just interested in moving that terrible internet and not streaming off a nas or similar loads then a pair of cheap bridges will get the job done. Over 50m would probably be ok on a windowsill or something.

You can get the outdoor ones for about US$25 each end on aliexpress, just check what powers them as some dont included a POE injector. Its non standard 24v POE normally like the old unifi gear used so you might be able to find some injectors for that around locally. Not tried the cheap 5.8GHz ones but a pair of 2.4GHz ones I got pushed close to 80 megabit over a few 100m when deployed at a friends farm.

Then take the signal inside the outbuilding and plug in a seperate AP. Dont try to use a repeater mode on the outdoor AP to get inside as it will murder the reliability and speed of it.
