I recently bought a Netgear WNR834B router to replace my old router, as it always spiked lan party games every 8 - 10 seocnds. Little did i know however... the new netgear router i bought is no different >.<". Lan games would just spike every 8 - 10 seconds, and it feels like you're playing onling rather than playing on lan...

I just want to know, what good routers are there out there that can host good wireless lan parties? I'm talking about allowing at least 10 connections and not spike. I'm looking at a price range of about 200 ~ 350 NZD, and hoping for a router that supports up to 802.11n (draft) with a speed of at least 270Mbps.

If you are looking for B or G - 54Mb/s wireless

Then i would recommend the Linksys WRT54GL for around $80-120 - running DD-WRT or Tomato (3rd party firmware)

I have two and run like a charm !!

If you looking at Daft N wireless..

Then try the Linksys WRT350N 1.0v for around $300
You can also run DD-WRT v24 build 0616 - Which would be highly recommended.

Bear in mind that for 802.11a or g, you would only get effective data throughput of around 3Mbps per user for 10 users. You also need to ensure that your access point supports QoS, or WMM. Without this you will have difficulty keeping the latency down.

Alternatively you could look at some enterprise equipment. I have a client successfully connect 80 handsets to 2 access points. You would need more than 2 for gaming speeds/latency, however the quality is notably better.

Well, the max i'll be getting will only be about 10 handsets, so i guess 1 access point will be enough. So getting a draft n router would obviously be better then?

You not get much better data rates from a draft n AP, if your clients are still onnly 802.11a/b/g. You will have slightly better throughput, as multipath interference will not cause as much re-sends, but throughput will still be limited to lowest common denominator. You could try getting a dual radio access point, and splitting half the users onto 5.8GHz.

I'd suggest a bunch of Linksys WRT-54GL's with DD-WRT or tomato loaded on them then, they are pretty cheap and very good.
