Over the last few years, Ive had HG659's, and Zyxel's......... the Huawei range drives me up the wall, port mapping never works for me. The Zyxel has been great but occasionally has port mapping issues, and VoIP drops out at random (was also restarting itself at random but firmware fixed that).

So I'm starting to think its time I get a decent router. Ideally I want one that has built in ATA for VoIP but that usually points me back to the Huawei style unit...

Phone is via VoIP - wife wants to continue using our cordless handsets. (else Id just go softphone via mobile app)

ISP = BigPipe 100/100

I run a server at home (email, web, games)

So I either look at "high end consumer" router with built in ATA, or something more basic yet reliable (Ubiquiti etc) with a separate ATA.... wifi is already sorted with a Unifi.

Budget is limited (as usual) so $400 routers are out of the question :-p

Thoughts/suggestions ?

I have a couple of ATA's hanging around you can have for a few dollars. You'll just then need to grab a lovely access point (or repurpose your HG659) but the access point route is better. Go Wireless has you covered for this: https://gowifi.co.nz/manageda/gwn7610.html (and a PoE injector: https://gowifi.co.nz/power/gspoe.html)

This should create a pretty decent network.

when my old linksys ata went on the fritz. Then you can spend the rest of your money on a router/ap or router + ap(s)

My GWN7000 is still for sale.

Apart from the firmware speed issue and Grandstream's lackluster support, it was a pretty solid unit. The single pane controller management is pretty neat and, once I knew what I was looking for, it did everything I needed. And despite the long yards between releases, they have been steadily adding enterprise level features every release.

I only switched back to my Fritz because I want mah gigabits. Maybe if they release the GWN7630 for ~$200 and get around to fixing the speed issue, I might keep it.

However, I feel like a major selling point for it is pairing with the GWN76** range, so you may be better off with the Ubiquiti.

I'm a geek, but to be honest, I have so little free time available by the time I have sport, kids, wifey time, etc etc that my days of spending hours making a solution I can buy that does an equal or similar job for a couple of hundreds dollars, it's no longer worth it.

Or Untangle for those you swing that way (like me!)

You can run Untangle in a VM, although I have mine set up on a old AMD X4 CPU and dual Gigabit NIC, gives full line speed on a GB fibre plan. Way less then $400

I vote for build-your-own!!!

I havent touched Untangle in years - is it still "free" ? Theres no list that I can see of what you actually get with it, just talks about paying for Pro level stuff. edit: Ignore me... found some stuff :)

It can be run virtually, you'll need a minimum of two NIC ports to get it running for the WAN and LAN port

I've got some spare pcie dual and quad port intel server nic you can borrow to try it out before you invest if you want

They are both versions that use the linux igb drivers which was one of a few different requirements to enable me to get gig throughput

I had a netgear router that was playing up and acquired another one through a friend and drop offs started happening.

I took my old router wndr3700? - and installed DD-WRT firmware onto it.

I have not had a single problem with it since, in fact I think it is running better lol

Maybe worth a try before you upgrade?

OpenWRT is a solid performer too

No OpenWRT support for the Huaei HG659B.
