Can anyone tell me what this box is/does please. Note, photo is on it's side.

It has the copper coming in from the street as black cables and has blue cables going out to our phone jack points and ADSL jack point.  Would this contain the master splitter?  Or is it just a phone connection and the master splitter would be down stream on the blue phone cable somewhere?

It's a master splitter - little hard to see, but looks like an early ADSL (not VDSL) rated one.

Great, thanks.  Would the phone and ADSL be run from there on the same blue cable, as different strands, or would they be separate cables from there?

should be separate cables to reduce any interference

Is there an easy way to tell which cable is ADSL and which is phone?  I think I know, but I'm not 100% sure.

We're starting a reno where all our cabling on our main level (where our modem and router are) will be ripped out.  During the reno we will be living in a flat in the basement and I want to make sure internet still works.  The splitter in the photo is also in the basement.  So I thought if I got the right cable from this splitter re-routed to the flat, then I could just move the modem and router and be fine.

The way those old splitters are wired, they have two pairs. Orange pair should connect to the incoming line AND the ADSL jackpoint. Blue pair connects to all the voice outlets. Basically, the voice runs through the filter and ADSL bypasses it, this isolates line taps and other dodgy wiring from the ADSL circuit.

Very easy to swap out for a later (3 pair) filter if needed.

Here's a slightly clearer photo of instal with one of those.

You can see the 3-way scotchloks on the incoming line/ADSL feed and the 2-way ones on the line out to the voice outlets.

Perfect, thanks.  I don't understand exactly which wire is which, but I now know enough to know that it can be done and a techie will be able to move the ADSL modem etc pretty easily.

By the way, if I have two black cables coming in from the street does that mean two separate phone lines?  That would make sense as I think the flat in the basement had it's own separate phone line in the past.

Yep, more than likely a spare incoming pair. May or may not have been used for an extra line previously.

On your photo you can see the label tells you what colors go where.

Line is the incoming line from chorus
DSL is the output going to a dedicated DSL jackpoint
PHONE is the output which gets split and goes to every other jackpoint

The DSL pair can be happily be in the same cable as the voice pair. Absolutely no issue, and is very much standard practice.
