So I woke up this morning to discover that our internet had gone down sometime during the night.  I figured it was a simple matter of restarting either my phone or my router, but it's turning out to be more complicated than that.

For background we have Spark Fibre 100, and it's been pretty reliable for the past 6 years.  We have a Edgerouter 4, and a Unifi AP for wifi.

On our one ethernet connected PC, I've tried a restart, but it still shows as "no internet."  However, I've got successful ping results from 8.8.8.8.

I restarted my phone (Galaxy Note 8) and turned off mobile data.  I got intermittent/slow connections, but some apps won't connect to the internet at all.  Currently, I can't connect to the internet at all on my phone.

On our Fire TV (on wifi), it seems to be working fine.  I can access Netflix, Youtube, and it's working normally.

On our second Fire TV (ethernet) it's also working fine.  As above, I can access Netflix, Youtube no problems.

I've tried restarting the router (no change), power-cycled the ONT (no change), and restarted all non-working devices (no change or inconsistent connections).

This strongly suggests to me that the internet connection is fine, but that something is going on in my home network.  I didn't make any changes recently, so I can't think of anything to roll back.  Any suggestions?

Can you do a nslookup using 8.8.8.8 or 1.1.1.1 and get results back?

Along with the above nslookup test, what dns record does your clients get via dhcp.

When I do that I get a timeout.

I managed to dig up a Spark HG659b router, and plugged that in.  It worked fine.  So that suggests its the router.

Anyone have any thoughts on what to do with the router?  I've always found the Edgerouter a bit tricky to understand, particularly the DNS setup, if that's what the problem is.

Okay, I tried that command, and still get a "request to Unknown timed-out."

I just tried it again and this time it worked.  It showed server is dns.google, 8.8.8.8, an have a "non-authoritative answer" with aliases www.stuff.co.nz and fairfaxmedia.co.nz.edgekey.net

I keep trying different sites in Chrome.  I just tried apple.com and it didn't load (DNS probe finished bad config).  But after about 2 mins it reloaded fine.

I'm not sure what you're looking for.  In network settings, it's showing No Internet Access at the moment (it was "connected" a moment ago, but it seems to be oscillating between the two states)

When I run ipconfig, it shows the link-local IPv6 address, an IPv4 address, a subnet mask, and the default gateway.  The only other line is "connection-specific DNS suffix", but that's blank.  There's no other information from ipconfig

When I run ipconfig /all it shows the dns servers as the same address as my default gateway
