Looking at a new house that has a fibre connection but despite being built in 2012 has a grand total of SIX cat5e runs through the ~260m2 of two storey goodness. They are at least one in each room of interest but I was thinking a neat way to deal with that would be to have a POE powered switch in each room... POE just means neater and no wall warts.

Anybody have any favourites? Don't need any special features or to be high performance - this is just for home.

That does look ideal. If I'm honest I was looking on Aliexpress and finding only switches suitable for POE cameras :-)

I've used quite a few of those ones and never had an issue. Only thing to be aware of is that if you want to utilise the2 x 802.3af outputs at higher wattage you need to use a 802.3at switch to power it. If you only want to use lower wattage outputs or just the regular Ethernet ports 802.3af is fine.

I have some of the unifi US-8s that Ive put where I need more ports like the gaming area and workbench, they work fine but you need the controller to get the most from them. Also when its all unifi you get the topology view which is neat.

Hi, having moved into a new house of similar age I have managed to get ten runs in, but in three of the rooms where a WAP is required to give good coveage I have placed UniFi inwall WAPs which have two ethernet ports on the bottom edge. These units do have odd POE dietry requirements of 802.3af/A which fortuntely I found a TP-Link TL-POE105S injector for $28 works. The ethernet ports can be managed, as in vlans.
