My work laptop (WinXP) recently developed a problem but I don't have a clue what caused it and I haven't been able to fix it.
The laptop used to connect over WLAN and LAN in the office, as well as at home.
I have a Belkin N1 MIMO Wireless Cable Router at home, connected to a Telstra modem.
At work, I use a Linksys WRT54G router, connected to the network switch.
This system has been in place for several years and I've never had a problem connecting at work or at home.

Since Saturday a week ago, the laptop cannot get an IP address either on WLAN or LAN, at work or at home.
All I remember doing around that time was fooling around with a PCMCIA DVB-T card and installing drivers and software for it.

Both the WLAN and LAN show up as connected on the laptop, but neither gets an IP address.
The WLAN also shows up as Authenticated.
Other laptops at work and at home still work OK, over both WLAN and LAN.

When I run IPCONFIG /ALL, the only response is:

"Windows IP Configuration"

I don't get anything else that tells me the MAC, PC name, device, etc.

When I run NBTSTAT -N, the only response is:

"NETBT is not bound to any devices"

I suspect there is a service that has been disabled but I don't know which one, or how to kickstart it.

I've had some experience setting up and fixing network issues but this has got be beat.

Any advice is greatly appreciated and I'll buy a coffee(s) for the person(s) who helps me fix this. Limited time offer only! Maximum of 10 :)

More info:

1. Both work and home WLANs are encrypted with WPA-PSK and have MAC Address filtering
2. I have several different types of remote services installed. CISCO VPN Client, Citrix ICA Client, SecureClient and VNC.
3. Windows Firewall is disabled.
4. Blackice is running for remote office connectivity, e.g. corporate e-mails and servers.
5. At the time this happened, I noticed that the SecureClient icon stopped appearing on the taskbar and the SecureClient services also stopped working.

Don't know if any of these things has any bearing/affect on the problem.

This sounds extremely like a very common issue with Windows getting it's TCP/IP stack corrupted. One thing to try would be to completely uninstall the entire TCP/IP stack (Not just the network adapter itself) and re-install. Another slightly less laborious and more common reason for failure is the "WinSOCK" issue.

Repairing the WinSOCK can be done quite easily, just a quick google search on the word itself will reveal a lot of options for fixing it, I highly recommend finding the manual option for fixing it, (Unfortunately the commands escape me at this moment in time but I can tell you it's done from the command line and by using a command that involves the word Catalog) as there are plenty of automated programs out there to do it for you (Called Winsock fix etc) but unless you know where they came from, who wrote them etc I wouldn't recommend putting your trust in them.

Hope this helps.

Hollow,
Thanks for the advice. I'll keep that in mind if I have the problem again.
I was fortunate enough to have a Ghost image from 3 months ago and was able to restore back to that point. Phew!
Had to do some resets to get back onto the corporate domain but was able to connect to networks again.
Always a last resort but it definitely saved a lot of work when I don't know why it went awry.
Cheers,
