I am keen to know if I got 2 Ubiquiti 5GHz 19dBi NanoBeam AC Gen 2 Access Points that were 1.5km apart in Canterbury (aka flat but trees & houses), would it work?

I have house on 5mb ADSL and family house 1.5km away on fibre.. so i am hoping we could set up a connection.. we do play games so hoping ping would be still good as well

any advise appreciated

No.

You need clear LoS and you obviously aren't anywhere close to that based on your description.

Don't try to tree punch. it really doesnt work well at all. you might manage it, but then latency wont be where your wanting it.

Basically ALL of the Ubiquiti radios will make a link over 1.5km (that isnt far at all). But as others have said, going through stuff is no good.

Map your link out using one of the basic tools, then actually physically look at what is along the path of the link (trees, buildings etc). Then decide if it will still work. It may just be a case of getting sufficient elevation at each end if the trees aren't significant.

If you don't have clear LoS then no it won't work either. Without clear LoS the only product that may work OK (assuming you have semi obstructed LoS) is a 900MHz link but that'll only give you around 10Mbps.

If you can clear the trees you might be ok. Back in the day we used to utilize Knife edge refraction to get a signal to areas without clear LOS. Hard surfaces like roof tops will refract the signal. I setup a very similar link where I cant see each end with Ubiquiti 100Mhz radios at 5GHz, but have a rooftop or two on a hill in the path. I have had a rock solid 100MHz link running for 8 years now.

I did put both radios up as high as I could, one is on a galv 6m scaffold pole (guyed etc) , the other a tanapole.My link distance is only 650m.

Despite all the calculations you can do, radio can be a black art at times, sometimes suck it and see is the only way to find out.

Hi, so just to clarify, there are now three respondents to this thread that plan and install this stuff as part of their day job, my self included, if there are trees or other obsticals then a 5GHz link is not going work, or if it does will do so for intermittent periods rendering it useless.

Cyril7 is right here, I Run a wisp on the sideline and I don't even bother to install a connection unless I have a direct line of sight, even using the link calculator.

Because at the end of the day it will be your headache that you have to deal with! you will be the one getting all the phone calls and complaints that the internet is not working!
