So wanted to start setting up a home 10G setup, do not want to go full out at the moment as don't need to.

First connection will just be a peer to peer setup with a switch going in later.

2 x Edimax EN-9320SFP 10GbE Ethernet SFP+ PCI

https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/NETEDM1091/Edimax-EN-9320SFP-10GbE-Ethernet-SFP-PCI-Express-S

2 x 10G SFP+ RJ45 Copper Transceiver

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M5LIUK5/ref=pd_luc_rh_sspa_dk_huc_pt_expsub_0

This will be connected from a unRAID server to a hackintosh/windows box. I have verified there are drivers for the cards and that they work with both boxes ok.

Is this going to be ok you think just to start with ?? , Apart from the transceivers everything else will come from PBtech as I have a business account there and it is just easier to get stuff through there.

Whats the distance? You could go for a DAC cable if it's under 20m

Have you had a look on eBay or aliexpress?

I picked up some Mellanox 10GBe PCIe cards dirt cheap I think they were somewhere around 13-20 USD a piece many years ago.

Ali Express has this one

A 3m DAC From gowifi is 56+gst

FS.com do custom DAC's and cables. You might find even MMF is cheaper than Cat6a cable + those SFP modules

RJ45 Copper Transceivers aren’t cheap, if you haven’t bought them already you can definitely save a few pennys with a DAC. FS.com is a great option.

Another vote for eBay and FS.cam.

I brought 10G SFP+ cards with a 3 metre DAC for ~$80NZD from eBay.

A couple of fibre SFP+ modules and a 30 metre fibre cable from FS was also around $80.

For 15 m DAC is marginally cheaper from FS but not enough to sway the decision either way. I opted for fibre for better chance of cross-vendor compat., but actually I've found DAC to not be an issue for any of my gear.

I've a dual Intel X540-T2 in use for the main server. Some clients have a Sonnet Solo 10G Thunderbold 3 adapter. :-)

- NET: FTTH, OPNsense, 10G backbone, GWN APs, ipPBX

Sounds like you got the current setup sorted, through I would say most 10g cat 6 switches are 10g/1g only, and will not do 100mb, so if you have any old devices that only do 100mb, they will not connect to the new switch, easiest way overcome this is to have a 1000/100/10 switch plug into the new switch and upload to the new switch with a 1g connection, and plug the 100mb devices into this switch, so not a big problem but needs planning for.

I now have all the cards and cables on the way including a thunderbolt 3 to 10g adapter.

What are the recommendations for an unmanaged switch. Possibly one that has the ability for 10g RJ

Thought on below and anything else anybody might know of.

Something like this ??

MikroTik CRS305-1G-4S+IN or CRS309-1G-8S+IN would be cheaper than that QNAP.

Those switches are pretty rock solid, I have one that I run all my gear from and it just works, it's only the 8 port but that's fine

or if you want to go cheaper and with some more features you can choose Router os or SWos
