Hi Everyone,

Been struggling to get decent transfer speeds from my NAS on wireless. I have a Orcon Gigabit connection and the ONT is connected to a Asus RT-AC88u router. All cables are brand new D-Link Cat6. Connecting to the asus router on 5ghz. Is used to be able to get anywhere from 50-60 MBps on wireless both read and write. Now for some reason the speed has dropped to 10-12 MBps. The laptop i am using is a Lenovo Yoga 920 with an 8th Gen i7-8550u processor with 8gb ram and 1tb ssd. Running a speed test (ookla) on this laptop gets me 450-460 mbps. So i assumed a speed of 50-50MBps should be possible on file transfers. The NAS is an Asustor 202TE with two identical WD Red 4TB drives on the list of recommended drives.

On Ethernet i get an easy 65-75MBps. WiFi only 10-12MBps.

So far i have tried replacing the NAS (with a Synology 218+ that i borrowed from a mate). No change. Tried a different router (Asus AC68U). No change. Brand new Cat6 cables to replace the Cat5e i had earlier. No change. Different ports on the router. No Change. Tried disabling ipv6 on NAS, Router and Laptop. Very small increase. Tried the resetting the NAS and using it with a spare 256 GB Samsung SSD (to test if its a failing drive). No change. Disabled AV and AIProtection on the laptop and router. No Change. I dont have QOS enabled. Running minimum SMB2 and Maximum SMB3 on the NAS. Slight change. Both NAS and Laptop are on a static IP. No change. Usually copying video files to watch on the TV, so they can be pretty large files, upto 2-3 gb each. Should get good read and write speeds. The NAS network connection reports a Gigabit connection full duplex.

My wife uses a Macbook Air, and while i cant figure out how to view read and write speeds on Apple over SMB, i can tell that its at least about twice as fast if not more.

So my best guess at this point is its the laptop. I am running Win10 Pro x64. All drivers and updates installed. I have tried downloading fresh drivers for the wirelesss card (its an 11ac, 2x2, Wi-Fi + Bluetooth® 4.1 card, for the life of me cant remember the model, i can find it and post it if required). That didn't help. And internet speed tests get me 450-460mbps easy over wireless. ++Netbios is enforced.

I am at a loss, need help from you guru's out there. Tried everything my noob brain could think of! What can i try next?

If you're talking 10-12 Megabytes per second (80-96 Mbps) then I would say the speeds you're getting are what I would expect for wireless. I would in fact say you should be very happy with those speeds.

Wireless can be influenced by all sorts of conditions as well as transfer methods. You are also not taking into account the local processing overhead and the overhead of transferring over a local network which is likely greater than a online speed test.

To give yourself a bit more insight I would recommend checking your wireless utilization in task manager while you are attempting a large transfer.

Thanks Arctic, i am actually hitting between 18-20 MBps now after all these changes. But for some reason i remember the wireless transfers as being a lot quicker, circa 50 MBps. And one day they just weren't anymore, and i dont know what has changed. Maybe its just my memory playing tricks on me. But file copies were sure a lot quicker earlier.

How would i check the wireless utilisation? I can see the speed the WiFi is transferring at from the Task Manager, is that what you're referring to? Thanks!

are you talking megabytes per second (MB/s) or megabits per second(Mbps)? there is a factor of 8 difference between them.

5ghz WiFi i presume? what is the channel width, what is the reported speed of the connection?

what is your connection speed to the nas like when connected via ethernet via the router? ie rule out wifi as the problem

A 2x2 client on a 40MHz channel will have a PHY rate of around 300Mb/s, so 70-100Mb/s real throughput is to be expected.

also connect directly to the nas and rule out the router

Thanks for the replies everyone, i am connecting via 5Mhz 20/40/80 auto. Tried 80Mhz but that dropped the speed to 12 MB/s, which is weird, I thought that 80 Mhz would be the quickest.

Connected to NAS via Cat6 I get 86 MB/s, connected to through the router with Cat6 I get 82 MB/s. Both quite satisfactory. Wireless still connecting at max 19.86MB/s.

so you have a 2x2 capable Client, sounds like your also experiencing slower speeds on 80mhz which would indicate...

a. your not testing near your wifi and something else is influencing things (IE distance - Although your connect rate would disagree here)

b. there is congestion on the channel your using when switching to a full 80mhz channel.

c. you have other devices on the network also utilizing the wireless bandwidth (remember a client just being connected can still hog things a fair bit.)

I'd look at those options and adjust it from there.

truth be told the 100mbit~ constant throughput your getting isn't the worst, it's all going over the air on what's essentially a very basic client these days...

So i changed channel to 149 from 153, changed the password so no other device could connect, and switched to 80Mhz. Getting 14.15Mb/s. So it isnt other devices on the network. They were all disconnected.

Tried a couple different channels, no joy.

Any way to remove or isolate the interference, moving the router about or something. I am connecting line of sight with no obstructions from about 5 feet away.

149 and 153 cover the same portion of the space.

so your issues isnt your nas, its your home wifi. as it works fine over an Ethernet connection.

download the Wifi cards drivers from its manufactures website and install. see if there is a firmware update for the router

That was one of the first things I had tried, latest firmware for the network card. Uninstalled and reinstalled, did not make a difference. I’ll try again tonight. The router is running the latest Merlin 3.0.0.4.384.14.2. I only bought and installed this router 3 days ago in an attempt to fix this issue. I’ve tried an Asus AC68u, an Asus 88u, Netcomm NF18ACV with Google WiFi. None worked.

Had this issue for months now and I’m completely at my wits end. Just can’t figure it out!
