Hi All

Looking for some help with my home setup please.

I have 2 Degrees fibre with the 7490 Fritzbox and i have just picked up the new google nest wifi mesh.

Setup was easy and it seems to work well but i am getting a lot of connection drop outs. I have a new sony smart tv and it will constantly drop out every 20min or so when watching netflix for example. Other devices have similar connection dropout issues.

I've done some research and i see things like double Nat, bridge mode router, VLAN tagging but that's a bit above me to be honest haha. Ive turned the wifi off on the fritzbox to see if that was causing the issue but still no luck.

Has anyone had any success with my current setup? any router settings i can change? or do i have to get a new router...

any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks!!!

Anyone have any ideas?

I've read a managed switch might sort my issues?

Does your connection still drop out when it's solely Fritzbox connected? Like, with Nest switched off. Or is it a Nest thing?

Hi!

no dropouts with just the fritzbox. Only once i introduce the Nest into the setup. Tried putting the Fritzbox into bridge mode as i've heard some people have had success with that getting rid of the VLAN tagging issue. But couldn't get that to work, i think i was doing something wrong.

I think its a double nat issue that is causing the connection drop outs .....maybe

Then it’s not a new router I’d be looking at. Do the router logs tell you what the drop out is? Are you losing WiFi connectivity (ie problem with the Nest network) or is it an actual line dropout, requiring the router to reconnect?

hmmmmm im not sure, ill have to have a look at the reports and see.

Its only when im connecting to the tv for instance through the nest wifi.

Would i get the information through the fritzbox or the nest? the nest interface is pretty basic.

Fritz will tell you whether or not your internet connection is dropping. Nest won’t know if the external connection has gone, only that there’s nothing coming from Fritzbox. Is it only the TV that this happens to? Or do all devices suffer the same outage when the TV does? If so, does the WIFi network die? Suddenly no WiFi symbol & instantly not connected to any network?

It is quite possible though that Nest is causing Fritzbox to drop the external connection. Because Nest. Sony also are meddlesome when it comes to connectivity - for a long time you had to buy a Sony USB WiFi adapter to add wireless to Sony TVs. Belkin, DLink, Asus - all the other brands were rejected, Sony or don’t internet.

ill have to look at the logs, i don't think the fritz is dropping external connection (maybe....)i think its only the nest that's dropping.

I've tried other devices, Ipad ect connected to the Nest and they had issues as well, i'm not sure about the wifi symbol, ill take closer notice when i try it again. In regards to the TV, when connecting to the fritz its been fine, no drop outs what so ever.

Doing some reading it says that i could be getting a double nat issue with the way its setup.that could be causing the unstable connection.

thanks for you help i appreciate it!

I have a similar issue. Not done any troubleshooting tho. I am Vodafone but I use an old Fritzbox as an extender.  Works reasonably well. Configuration was supplied here a few years ago. Used happily with the small Home Hub (7 inch) and many devices with no real issues bar the Fitz needs rebooting every now and then (no matter what accessing via ie iPad, phone or hub). It just seems to hang and a reboot fixes.

Brought the Next Hub Max (10 inch) a week ago and it just drops connections all the time from the Fitz. Been close to unusable.

Close to just going to different extender tbh. Not sure if helpful to OP but .....

Oh that's interesting! I see now that Orcon offer rental of the Google Wifi mesh with their fibre plans, but sounds like you still need to use it with the supplied modem.

To use google home nest hub you will need to go into internet settings in the Fritzbox and enable PPPOE passthrough.  This solved mine on the 7940 immediately.  Working fine now no problem.  PPPOE enables a device to establish its own internet connection. I can now have ll services enabled on the device - spotify, netflix, album etc
