Hi everyone. Im new to the forums and a total noob when trying to do anything with this stuff and Ive deided to give it a go. Please bare with me.

Ok.

Iv just purchased a inexpensive 5 port switch what I have setup goes something like this.

IHUG > D-Link502t > 5port Switch > 1port to PC and 1port to Laptop.

I googled "networking basics" and this is what I got and can connect both to the internet at same time.

Now I was wanting to send/share files between the 2, I have googled and googled and tried things to no avail.

Both are running windows xp.

Can someone please help me.

The main reason is I want to play games against my brother so the intetrnet connection is not priority right now.

Thanks in advance..

Make sure both PC is in the same 'workgroup'
start>right click my computer>properties

Under computer name tab, see the workgroup, click to rename computer bla bla ... reboot computers, then you need to set sharing permissions within your drives/folders. have fun.

Oh and welcome to geekzone

Yup.
I created a folder and labelled it "test folder" and put 3 images inside.

When I go into my network places it says Local Network and I can see the folder.

Now  how do I share/view it on the other pc?

Thanks..

Man you're killing me. Check here. You just start putting your files there? You should try viewing it from the other PC not your local machine.

Sorry man.

I followed your link and seems I dont have the "file sharing(recommended)" check box when i go into
my computer>tools>folder options>view . .

I can see the other PC when i go into my network places>view work groups if it helps.

Both have xp home edition sp2.

Thanks..

Simplest way is to create your folder and share it by right clicking, the same way like you did with your images. do the same on the other computer, you'll be fine.

Sorry was a bit unclear earlier.

I created a test folder, right clicked it and enabled shhring etc.

Now on the other PC where/how etc do I find it..

In work groups, I can see myself (ME)and also the other PC (BOB). When I click on the other PC (BOB) it says that I do not have permssion to access this netwrok resource if it helps.

Thanks..

hmm did you restart the computers after joining the workgroups? If so from my network places you can view the folders you are sharing.

Yes, restarted etc.

In network places on my PC its showing the "test folder" that I am sharing/enabled.

But when I hop onto the other PC (BOBs) and go to network places, the window says "unspecified" as where mine says "Local network" and the only item showing is an icon (Globe with a mouse) labelled Microsoft Windows Network.

Thanks...

Sorry but im probably confusing you.

In My Network Places>View work groups on my PC, I can see both his and my PC but when I jump on his and try click into view work groups it just makes a sound and cant go into it.

I think that PC is dodgy and going to try again with a more reliable one. See how it goes..

Thanks for your your help..
