I've recently purchased a D-LINK PowerLine AV2 1000 (DHP-P601AV) Gigabit Passthrough Kit (from Harvey Norman) for use in connecting lounge modem back to home office 8-port ethernet switch.

A couple of times since install it's dropped connection, & connected devices report "No internet"

Photo is of current state of the device:

From the product manual it advises (from top down):

1) Ethernet LED on Both = Solid: The Ethernet port is linked

2a) Powerline LED on Lounge (connected to modem) = Red: The powerline link rate is fair

2b) Powerline on Office (other end of connection) = Blinking Red (The powerline link rate is fair) & Green (The powerline link rate is excellent)

3) Power LED on Both = Solid: The device is receiving electrical power

I've tried both reconnecting & resetting both power (in correct order), but get same result on both. Also tried resetting the modem with no change to service.

Does anyone have any experience in resolving this issue, or any other advise for these devices?

Thanks in advance.

In my experience this is just the nature of Powerline, it's using a medium that was never designed for data carriage and is full of electrical appliances ready to cause interference. Performance is going to vary wildly house-to-house depending on your electrical wiring.

If the link works but is intermittent like you say, probably the only two things I can suggest are:

1) Making sure you have the Powerline adapters connected directly to wall outlets (no power strips, extension cords, etc)

2) Trying various different combos of wall outlets around the house if available to test performance (Powerline works really poorly across outlets on different circuits)

I've got some spare TP-Link adapters you could try out if you're in Auckland but I suspect the results might be largely the same

Coincidentally I have exactly the same issue with the same kit i.e. D-Link DHP 600av.

I have had a couple of units for about three years and they've been stable and done their intended job very well. However, today I bought another couple of units to be the basis of non-wired wifi expansion using a couple of old routers converted to access point operation. But on installing the new units this afternoon, the old units have gone unstable and I can't figure it out.

Any help and advice welcome, and if I get a result from my searches and tinkering I'll put up another posting.

Cheers,

Powerline adapter throughput depends almost entirely on electrical circuit and individual power point.  Optimizing involves trial & error, a game of musical power points.

Hi, and therein your result is the issue with PLC based systems, it might sound counter intuitive but changes in load at 50Hz (ie applicances being connected and turned on and off) will change the impedance of the power network in the bands used by PLC, which means their reliance on a stable transmission line is continually being altered as applicances change their 50Hz load on the network.

End result, what might work now, might not in a few minutes, and as these are complex calculations that make or break it, you may never understand exactly why or what happened. Hence I dispise PLC systems, complete waste of time and effort, invest in running an ethernet cable instead.

1) Followed installation instructions & have directly into wall (as per photo). Oddly there's been no load change on that socket or powerboard that passed through from it. I moved mini-stereo from this to other powerboard with no difference to load or powerline adapter LEDs.

2) Moved lounge adaptor to alternate socket in same room (thanks to having a 5m cat5e cable handy). Ethernet over powerline restored (for now).

Thanks for the offer of the TP-Link adapters. That's what I upgraded from but the ones I was using didn't have the pass-through power point.

Thanks for the advice. All seems to be working, but will probably get a sparky in to fit a handful of dedicated ethernet ports where they're needed.

Hi, the change in load is not nessecarily related to the socket you are using the PLC on, it can be anywhere in your house, infact it could be the neighbours, PLC is like a jelly poke it in one corner and it pops out some other.
