As above. Friend has original Google Wifi (not the new Nest version). I advised him against purchasing it, but somehow I'm still stuck helping him with his ongoing problems.

He's on Spark fibre so had to set it up with a double NAT since the PPPoE connection had to be VLAN 10. I know the new NEST version supports this, but was it ever added via a firmware update to the original version?

I'm not convinced the double NAT is part of his issues, but I'd like to be able to rule it out.

Thanks

Nope. Still not supported. You'll need to use a switch in between to tag the VLAN.

Thanks. At this point I doubt they'll ever add support then.

The alternative it to have the ISP disable the VLAN10 requirement.  I've never asked an ISP to do this on an existing connection, but have done it many times on new connections.  Not all ISPs will do this.

Didn't realise that was an option.

What issues is he having, if its regular daily disconnections or just stop passing traffic randomly then its a built in feature, buy another product is my advise, after days of trying to sort out a similar issue for a friend I advised to throw it away, which I then did and replaced with another product, THAT WORKS!

Take a look at this thread, dont start at the beginning, instead go to the very end (its a long thread) and read back, you will find the product is crap and Google dont give a rats

I'd probably rather leave the VLAN 10 requirement in place (I can see the benefit from a support perceptive to leave it "standard").

To minimize the impact of the double NAT, would it be advisable to completely disable the Firewall on the spark router (HG659b) and set the Google Wifi WAN address as DMZ?

I'm not familar enough with what the firewall on the HG659b actaully does to be confident disabling it since I also don't know how good the Google Wifi router acts as a firewall either.

Yeah, it's random disconnections requiring device restarts or being connected but getting no traffic. Like I said, I really don't think the double NAT is the culprit, but thought it was worth ruling out if possible.

I'm quite sure it's a "feature" as you say. I advised him not to get it, and have since advised him to replace it.

Hi, placing the GWifi in the DMZ will not stop double NAT, you could get a small managed switch to drop the vlan for you

Having owned the Google WiFi, my recommendation is to sell it! I now have an AmpliFi HD and will never look back.

Thats the same one we had to get for work and it does the job to strip the vlan tag.

I know it would't prevent the double NAT, it'd just forward all inbound ports. I was thinking more along the lines of making the double NAT as easy to manage as possible (port forwarding, UPnP if required. etc).

I don't for a second think it will solve anything, so in my mind not worth spending money on managed switch (even a cheap one).

Hi, totally agree, send it to the skip, only suggested the switch to present possible solution to the double NAT issue.

I had used my Google WiFi for only 3 days then I returned it!

Honestly if you need to spend all this time and effort to get something working correctly; then my view is to find a solution that will work out of the box as easy to use.

Some of those overpriced consumer routers with WiFi 6 are just a wast of money!

I'm with you 100%. If it were mine I would have replaced it long ago (actually I never would have bought it in the first place).

Well. I didn't actually buy the Google WiFi by choice. My daughter did thinking it was better than what we had. I tried it and regret even trying!

It was 3 days of my life I can never get back!
