Hi,

I’m in the process of deciding where to place an access point on my downstairs ceiling. I have a Ruckus R510 and am looking for suggestions how to temporarily hold it in place whilst trying out various places on the ceiling whilst I take some signal measurements? I’m not using professional tools, e.g network analysers, so plan to take readings from my laptop and phone.

Thanks in advance.

Hi, a ladder, couple of bits of timber to create a upside down L backet and a G clamp to hold it to the top of the ladder? Thats what I use

A second person to hold it, or some reusable/removable adhesive pads

I think anything that would stick to flat ceiling paint well enough to hold weight would leave a mark.

We're talking what 300g - 400g here, though, I assume, not a 3kg rackmount beast surely? :)

Plus the words 'temporary' and 'testing' in the title.  Stick it up or get someone to hold it for a few minutes, use a wifi analyser app around the house, if successful mount it properly.

Wedge it in place with an appropriate length of pipe, conduit, or timber? Conduit in particular is quite springy when bent and wants to straighten out, so should push off the floor and AP quite well.

Non-conductive is best to avoid impacting the signal too much - a body next to it might affect the propagation.

This is 3M tape
"Not recommended for use on wallpaper, delicate surfaces or walls painted with flat paint. May damage some substrates upon removal."

If I could find some strips that I have somewhere I have a ceiling due for painting that I'd experiment on. If it held it would probably leave some trace. I've never managed to spot clean a ceiling without it looking obvious. Cleaning ends up being a repaint.

The 3M Command velcro strips are designed so as not to damage the wall when removed (if removed properly!). Plenty of places that stock them.

Dont overthink things .

Just place it on a wooden chair or wooden step ladder or table . I wouldnt stress about getting it on the ceiling just for doing some tests
If the signal is bad when sitting on a chair, the signal will probably be bad if on the ceiling

This assumes its for downstairs ONLY . ie you dont expect the signal to be strong upstairs
