I've got an old QNAP 251 NAS that is giving me a smart warning on one if the disks.
Probably time to think about replacing them.
It is lightly used as a media server and has a security camera recording 24/7 on it.

It currently has WD reds in it but I see that the WD purples are now available.

Since it is doing 24/7 recording any reason not to install the purples into it?

Spyware: Don't buy WD.

Why not? I've had a Qnap TS-220 for 7 years now. WD reds inside, runs just fine.

Installed a couple of 4 TB WD Red on my Synology a few months back and had no problems. Will check models later.

WD have more recently admitted the issue, and introduced WD RED Plus drives, which are definitely CMR technology

So you think. https://blocksandfiles.com/2020/04/14/wd-red-nas-drives-shingled-magnetic-recording/

Old news. A couple of months later they changed their branding so you can buy either SMR or conventional, depending on what performance characteristics you need. Red = SMR, Red plus = CMR. https://blog.westerndigital.com/wd-red-nas-drives/

So, all my WD drives have headed one way since, into the bin. Why be loyal to such a company.

I've got 2x QNAP NAS'es - a TS-228A and a recently acquired TS-231p3-4G.

I've had the TS-228A for a little over 2 years, and I had 2 disks on it - one was a Seagate IronWolf 4TB drive, the other is a WD Purple 4TB.  I initially set them up as "single" - I started with the Seagate first using it as a backup / storage drive, and added the WD Purple later for the 24x7 Surveillance Station NVR function.  A couple of months ago I received a SMART alert on the Seagate failing, and as it was the primary disk partition for the NAS I've had issue with the NAS starting up etc.  I ended up having the replace the HDD, and had to blow away everything and start again. And thus I decided to get another WD Purple to go with the existing WD Purple and set it up as RAID1. Also also "converted" the TS-228A to become a dedicated NVR for my use.

That was also around the time I decided to get a 2nd NAS - the TS-231p3-4G, to be used as data backup/storage NAS, and with that I bought a pair of WD Red Plus (EFRX and EFRZ drives), also set up in RAID-1.

I must say for the oldest WD Purple that I've had (for over 2 years, literally writing to it 24x7), I've not had an issue and would be happy to get it again if I were to use it as an NVR.

Good thing I read about the issue with the WD Red with SMR, and opted to go with CMR/WD Red Plus.  Also read somewhere the WD Red was based upon the old Maxtor drives (which WD acquired a while back) and they are not as reliable as WD Red Plus - could be wrong though...

Edit: Fixed typo andgrammar

I have a 9 year old unRAID NAS - and generally use (std) Seagate drives - incl shucked ones because cheap!

12 HDD's in total - mainly used for media storage - but it has for the last year or so also been used for 3 x IP cameras as well.

Oldest drive has been powered on for the full 9 years now - but will be replaced soon as it is small @ 3TB.

So I have personally been very happy with price, performance and lifetime of their std drives.

Note: 2 drive failures over that time - 1 Seagate + 1 WD - but this is partly my fault for not paying more attention to HDD attribute / failure reporting.

Been a user of Toshiba N300 for a couple of years in ReadyNAS and Unraid box... They are CMR SATA 6 GB/s 7200 RPM and come in a variety of sizes and often on sale on Amazon - 4TB currently $NZD180 all inclusive.

Out of interest @driller2000, what NVR are you running on Unraid box?

maxtor was bought by seagate. not sure if it has changed hands since, but i doubt seagate will hand wd any of the maxtor ip/designs, even if they did on-sell.

i'm using 4tb ironwolf in a TS-420. they'd be over 2 years old now.

Pretty much this, if you want actual stats on reliability check out the quarterly hard drive reliability reports that Backblaze releases

Anecdotally I've had great luck with the CMR versions of the WD Red drives - absolutely avoid the SMR ones because write performance is abysmal

Each time one of my 2TB Seagate Barracudas has died (4/5 have died so far) I've replaced it with a WD20EFRX and not a single one of those has died
