I’m wondering if I’ve got an issue with my WiFi in the house:

Lately my IPTV service has been running very poorly. Lots of lagging.
The TV has from day 1 been connected via WiFi, as for some reason, the IPTV service doesn’t work when the TV is connected via Ethernet (anyway, that’s a different story).

When I run a speed test, I get decent speeds, so unsure why there’s lagging. Also, we all have no WiFi issues, when using our devices for Zoom calls etc.

Last night I tried to connect the TV to my phone hotspot instead of the WiFi and voila, no lagging!

My setup is fibre (MyRepublic 950 down) with their supplied router and a Cisco 8-port switch with 4 of them being PoE.
I’ve got 2 x Cambium E410 wireless access points installed in the ceiling (downstairs and upstairs).
The distance between the TV and the downstairs access points is approx 3 metres. The TV does say that it’s only hot 3 out of 4 bars for connection.
I can see that the TV is connected to the downstairs access point, not the one upstairs one.

Could this be an issue with:
The supplied modem from MyRepublic
The switch
The wireless AP’s

What IPTV service are you referring to??

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

This is not a wifi issue.

But why does it work fine, if I hotspot the TV to my phone?

Because they would be using different DNS servers to point to the source.

Thanks.
Hmm, not something I understand. How does that work in simple terms?

Interface configuration consists of an IP address, gateway and DNS server address. If no static address set then these are assigned via a DHCP server (the router). Most likely using MyRepublic DNS on router. Other variable is the rest of MyRepublics network.

OK, thanks.
Could the issue be solved by using static IP?
Or any other way of resolving it (apart from switching provider)?

Maybe, or by changing DNS used by router.

MyRepublic is also really not good for international bandwidth - they really cheap out here. If international streaming TV is a big thing for you then consider moving to a better ISP which is pretty-much anything not MyRepublic.

2degrees are pretty good and have one of the best deals on currently. Skinny / Spark, Voyager and even Vocus (Slingshot, Orcon, Sky, Stuff) are OK too.

DNS won't make a difference.

Thanks. I might contact MyRepublic first to hear if I can trial static IP for a day. It’s only an extra $8 per month.
