FreshTomato pops up occasionally on this forum so I thought we could use a thread for the various owners to collaborate and discuss experiences.

I'm currently running Version 2021.3 on a Netgear R7000 and it made a huge difference over my old Advanced Tomato setup.

For wireless I'm using 3 Aruba IP-315 units rather than the router's WiFi.

I don't currently use CTF (Cut Thru Forwarding) as I use a loopback rule for selected services, but I noticed the latest ARM 2021.5 release appears to allow loopback to work with CTF

I'd love to hear from anyone who is using CFT already and their experience with services like OpenVPN and Loopback.

Also is anyone here using Wireguard as an alternative to OpenVPN?

Interesting coincidence, I just flashed FreshTomato last night, as Advanced hadn't been updated for so long.

I'm using CTF as I had it on last time, I don't actually know if this improves things other than getting full speed on a speedtest (between 850-950Mbps) on my R7000.

In fact I only turned it on after reading about it here on GZ

So far so good but I don't use any of the other services you mention

A little bit more about my Configuration.

Router Netgear R7000

  • Stock firmware -> Shibby Tomato -> Advanced Tomato -> FreshTomato
  • 4 VLANS

    • Primary LAN
    • Guest
    • IoT
    • Lab
  • Wifi on Aruba IAP-315

    • 3 SSIDs for Primary/Guest/IoT VLANs
  • OpenVPN for remote access
  • ~100 entries with Static DHCP leases
  • 64GB USB-3 drive for Transmission

Overall it is a lot happier running FreshTomato compared with Advance Tomato.

Currently only running IPv4 as I had some odd issues with IPv6 on Shibby and Advanced Tomato so I'd love to hear from anyone that used IPv6 regularly
