Hi all

I am about to move in a brand new build house and was doing the inspection. Find the ont is actually already installed by chorus. Any chance would anyone explain to me what are those RJ45 cables for? Is it relate to cat6 cabling to room outlet? If so, in terms of connecting to a internet supplier modem, which cable do I suppose connect to the modem for main internet supplier modem and what are the rest of cable for?

Thank you very much

Regards
Paul

WHAT A MESS!

The blue cable from the ONT goes into WAN on your ISP router.
the others i assume plug into a switch or into the LAN ports on the router...
Assume they "terminate" elsewhere in the house...

You may want to look into a patch panel if this is your house vs rental

I doubt it was Chorus that did anything but the ONT connection. The others wouldve been a sparky running cable as part of the house build.

You'll have one from the ONT to your router. The others will probably feed into various rooms, saving you running them or using wifi.

Looking closer, it appears the blue cable for the WAN link goes into the wall and then somewhere else...
You may need to play bingo on the different panels around the house to find which is the WAN connection (i assume they based it in an office or more central location than the garage?

Nah, just plug a patch lead (should be one supplied with your router) from ONT to WAN port on your router, then connect the leads from the wall to LAN ports in the router.

You'll have to chose which 4 you want live as your router will have 4 LAN ports.

It might pay to gently pull on the cable attached to the ONT where it goes into the wall in case it's the same cable that comes back out of the same hole.

a bit of velcro or cable ties around the cables from the wall and you should be able to get things looking tidy - it's not too bad really.

Plugs on end of the cables are obviously cheaper for the sparky than the wall plate modules.

Yeah I think sparky or chorus have plugged that in for no particular reason
How many RJ45 outlets have you counted in the house? 5?

i try to think about that as well but can not recall 100%. one each in downstairs and upstairs living room for sure. and i think (not sure) each bedroom would have one also makes it 6?? that is why the math doesn't make sense. guess i will have to wait move in to figure out but was just thinking it would be better to figure out before move in.

If you need all the ports live, then you could run a few (or all) via 8 way gigabit switch that runs from the router...

If the sparky has been smart, the ONT is wired to one of two connections in the lounge, so you can put the Router/AP there and then wire back to a switch in the cabinet

if there is a double outlet by your TV location you put the router there.

WAN port into wall socket, comes out in bedroom cabinet, connect to ONT.

LAN port into wall socket, comes out in bedroom cabinet, connect to a small switch.

Connect other cables to the small switch to make other ports around the house live.
