Hi all,

Really keen to hear from anyone that uses a FRITZ!Repeater 3000, particularly in combination with a FRITZ!Box 7590 on a gigabit connection. Would be interested in your experienced in relation to speed and coverage.

Currently using the Orbi RBK50 but seeing poor PPPoE performance and some jitter, so considering alternatives.

Thanks!

The Fritz!Box as a router will fully outperform an Orbi or most "off the shelf" consumer grade routers due to it having hardware NAT. I can't comment too much on the Fritz!Repeater only because this totally depends on how you've got it set up but I fully bet it'll perform better than your current Orbi setup.

If you plug the repeater in by Ethernet it'll always perform better than meshing with the main unit - if this is an option for you then do it.

But I'm using a Fritz!Box 7490 + another 7490 in mesh mode at my parents and have not heard of any complaints - covers their whole house no problems and speed is great (120Mbit VDSL). Don't ever expect Gigabit speeds on Wireless however, you need to be using Ethernet for this.

Thanks for the reply Michael - yes, completely agree that the Fritz!Box is a much better router than the Orbi ever will be!

I am currently seeing 350-550Mbps over WiFi on the Orbi using wireless backhaul, which I am totally happy with (and know it's what I can realistically expect over WiFi), but it is the firmware instability and ping spikes which are annoying.

I have a spare Fritz!Box 7560 and when I put it into mesh mode with the 7590, its WiFi performance is significantly poorer than the Orbi set up (maxing out at about 200Mbps when connected to the 7560). This is also to be expected, because the Orbi has a dedicated 1733Mbps band for backhaul while the 7560 only has 866Mbps band that also needs to serve other clients.

This is why I'm particularly interested in the repeater as it is also tri-band, so I'm curious as to whether it would provide similar wireless performance to the Orbi set up. Only hesitation in this case is that the Fritz!Box itself is not tri-band, so there is no dedicated backhaul.
