I've just moved into a new house, which is supposed to have Fibre installed. It has this router/modem looking thing attached to the wall. It's got two pieces. One is attached to the wall which can't be removed, and the other, which looks like a router/modem is attached to it which can be easily removed. It has a WIFI antenna on it, etc.

For some reason when I turn it on, I can't detect the WIFI signal on either my phone or my laptop. I tried resetting it with a pin, but didn't make any difference. I don't know anything about Fibre connections, I'm used to having only a VDSL connection. Do I need an extra router/modem to hook up to this this? Why does this thing have a WIFI antenna if I can't even detect the WIFI signal?

I was with 2Degrees at my old house and would like to go with them again, but this thing on the wall says Chorus on it, "Type 300".

I'd appreciate any advice.

Hi,

that is just the current generation UFB fibre box or "ONT" with wifi that allows retail providers to use it as the router if they want to (wifi etc will come disabled by default), you should be able to go with 2degrees if you like, which requires their modem plugging into this first ONT box

Hi yes confusing as it seems the chorus ont, which is the fibre to copper ethernet converter looks like a full on wireless router, but in reality it's not, it's just a fibre converter.

So just order your service as with VDSL but connect your router via it's Wan port, not it's DSL port to LAN1 of the ont, job done.

Do you know if I can plug the router/modem into another phone jack in another room? It's just that the fibre thing installed on the wall is in the lounge and I'd prefer to have the wired connection in one of the bedrooms. Would I still get fibre or any connection at all if I did this?

Hi, if the house wiring is just single pair phone wiring then no, if it's wired for ethernet then most likely.

How old is the house, and maybe a couple of photos of the rear of the outlets in question.
