Afternoon all,

I'm wanting to install a VPN onto the home wifi so all devices are covered.

So I'm looking for router and VPN recommendations

Haha and maybe a guide on installing the VPN onto a router I cam buy in new zealand

Cheers,

E

May want to expand a bit more..... you want a VPN to your own connection, or to be able to run one for accessing geoblocked sites etc via a 3rd party ?

If to own connection, then Fritz units have the ability to do so.

More of the geo side of things. I have a mate that's moved to the states and we keep in touch by doing a watch party while we hang out but there are things he can get access to that I can't being in New Zealand

This is something I would strongly recommend you don’t do. A VPN doesn’t protect you in any way, it instead just uses somebody else’s network and you’re basically entrusting them with all your internet traffic. Providers have come out to say they’re not logging in the past but there have been multiple cases where this has been proven to be an utter lie. See this also: https://gist.github.com/joepie91/5a9909939e6ce7d09e29.

If you’re needing this on a more per device basis for unblocking georestricted content then I’ll recommend doing it on a per device basis instead of your entire network.

Consumer grade routers with VPN clients on them are not at all great. And I’ll always recommend using your ISP provided router unless if you have a very good reason not to.

We also can’t discuss geounblocking on the forums sorry.

if you have an old pc laying around and you want to give it ago, pfsense is an option for you to build your own router/firewall and you can setup vpns on them such as proton or many others.

give it a go, it can be fun a challenge, if you like it sweet, if it doesn't work at you're expecting it to then you can turn the vpn off and tinker with pfsense or just plug your old router back in

100's of vids on youtube on how you can install and configure pfsense as well as a few geekzoners [including myself] that can help you out if you get stuck
