Title says it all really :) I just found a brand-new HG659 in the back of the cupboard. I hate throwing it out, so was wondering whether anyone has suggestions as to what I could do with it.

EDIT: it's Vodafone branded.

Trademe $1 start price with no reserve?  Or keep as a configured spare in case your current router fails

update the firmware and that gets rid of vodafone stuff and opens up a few extra settings. then use it for a backup or wireless point etc.

Funny coincidence department!
I too just found one of those, also Vodafone.
I've been toying with the idea of converting it to a switch to make use of the USB port to share storage on my LAN.
Unfortunately I cannot find any firmware for the thing.
It's not supported by DD WRT or OpenWRT, and there is no firmware download available on the Huawei site.

Anyone know where to find firmware or software for the HG659 to save it from the bin?

I have no idea what this thing can do, but I have my very first Fritzbox 7170 with WiFi switched off in pure client mode as a VoIP telephone system behind a firewall in the office. Some conservative customers prefer to send faxes instead of emails and the virtual internal fax is great for that.
