Needing to install an additional PoE camera, but hoping to avoid the cost and effort of running all now cable back to the main switch. But running cable from one of the existing cameras to the new camera position would be easy.

So I'm after a small PoE passthrough switch that supports at least IEEE 802.3af, but preferably IEEE 802.3at.

Not having much luck Googling this from NZ suppliers. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks

djaggar:

D-Link DGS-1100-05PD

Was looking at that one, but no-one seems to have stock.

Also, the PoE budget is18W. The max consumption (combined) of the two cameras that would need to be powered is 18.1W. Probably fine as they're unlikely to both be at max at the same time, but I'd rather have a bit of a buffer there.

Something like the Ubiquiti USW-Flex, but you'll ideally need an 802.3bt power supply in order to provide full power to the PoE devices (15w per port)

If you happen to be in Christchurch you can borrow mine for a test ...

Thanks for the offer. I am in Christchurch, but the cameras are in Auckland.

Hmmm... that could be an option. I guess I'd want to disable PoE on the switchport from the main switch, then stick a 802.3bt injector between the main switch and the USW-Flex?

Yea, that's how I'd do it. Not sure if going down this path is budget friendly though, by the time you buy a switch plus an injector. But at least it's a solution to what you're after.

I use a couple of USW-Flex's to power some cameras and a bunch of Unifi Floodlights up my driveway. I disabled PoE on my core switch and placed a bigger injector between it and the Flex to handle the load.

Works a treat, apart from a spike when the lights turn on, everything seems to run far lower than the power the injector provides.

Bonus was only having to have two cables from the house up the driveway.

POE splitter off alixpress is what you need - there are them from 2 outputs to 4 outputs, some even gigabit, most 100 megabit - Under $10 for some of them.

I have a couple and then a whole lot of POE splitters to run small ethernet tat like the tuya zigbee gateways, raspberry pi's doing random things etc.

IR is the power user on cameras so look at the switch when its dark to see what they are taking, and they will take a little more when its cold because of the way LEDs work

type thing.

Also remember that if the cameras are 100 megabit then there are pair-splitters that will put 2 runs over 1 cable, but they were not much cheaper than the extenders with the water-resistant plugs on them and would have tied up 2 switch ports to do the same thing, but if you are at the limit of the ports capabilities that would be better than having it mess about with an injector.
