A family member thinks their internet is having wee outages all the time.

They have an app for some service that thinks this is so.

Maybe the app is flaky, or the service, or the wifi, or even the internet.

I would like to setup a laptop plugged directly into the router and "monitor" the internet connection.

What would be a good tool to use on a Windows10 PC to do this?

I know I can do ping 8.8.8.8 -t at a cmd prompt, but thats only good really if you are sitting and staring at it all the time.

At its simplest, you can ping and write out to a file, then analyse at a later date.

My money is on flakey wifi though.

SmokePing on raspberry pi. Great for tracking latency over time too.

Full Zabbix install, with agents on every endpoint running a ping every minute, make any loss a Disaster state and get push notifications via your chosen method.

Audiophiles are such twits! They buy such pointless stuff: Gold plated cables, $2000 power cords. Idiots.

I think that is a bit overkill. Nifty though.

I've used Uptime Robot for a few years now, it monitors a couple of ports and works great for my simple needs.

It gives me email notification of when the internet goes down, and when it comes back up. Also shows an up/down timeline too, which can be helpful if there are multiple issues over a period of time.

Totally free, just have to make a basic account.

We've been using PingInfoView (PIV), and already the app is alerting outages which are not reflected in PIV.

Might give PingPlotter and Uptime Robot a go as well just to be sure.

I have a Samknows box, I'm sure some Geekzone members may have one they no longer use . Or see if you or your relative are eligible for a new one.
