I have a SOHO LAN with 10 PCS and 7 Synology NAS units (all different models). A lot of data. I am upgrading it from 1 GB to 2.5GB.

The router, switches, PCs, and 3 of the newer NAS units all run well at 2.5GB - the extra speed is very helpful.

My remaining problem is with 4 of the older Synology NAS units: DS1813++, DS1019+, DS720+, DS716+II.

I hope to upgrade these using UGREEN USB to 2.5Gbps ethernet adapters (with a Realtek RTL8156BG chip).

I have found suitable drivers for each of the NAS units (on github), but need to run an SSH install command to force the NAS units to accept the drivers.

I have absolutely no idea how to do this.  (PuTTY?)  πŸ˜¦

I don't have an SSH terminal.

Advice please!

Powershell now supports ssh.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

I don't have an SSH terminal.

The PCs should have one,  us it to connect to the NAS devices

C:\Windows\System32\OpenSSH

scp is the "copy" command to copy file across from your machine to the connected machine..

Don't forget to enable the SSH service in the Synology settings.

Putty is good for this, and enable SSH on the NAS.

Use your NAS IP address and port 22, then use your admin account username and password to log in to the NAS, then complete your commands.

Then when done make sure to disable SSH

Thank you all for your advice.

I'm still unable to logon to any of the older Synology units using PuTTY.

It accepts my user name but will not allow me to enter a password.  πŸ˜¦

Fortunately I have three newer NAS units capable of 10GB.

You won’t see anything when you type in the password but it will be entering it.
Make sure you enter it correctly (you should be able to copy and paste it into Putty, usually just right click in the putty window to paste) and then hit Enter.

A trap for young players.

This young player watched four PuTTY "idiot's guide" videos before trying it - none of them mentioned that passwords would not show on screen when entered.

This was a "first" for me.

Thanks to good advice, I have now installed the drivers for the adapter - with a modest improvement in ethernet performance, but nowhere near 2.5GB.

(The old NAS units don't have a cache). (The same adapter works perfectly with PCs.)

The Speed limits,
could be to do with the actual speed of the USB interface (or the maximum speed that version of NAS/Linux supports as a USB interface)

or iirc everything USB has to go though the CPU - So it might be bottlenecking in the CPU(probably only on a single thread), when crossing the network.

But great to hear you got everything over the 1g

(You might want to explore SMB multi-chanel and enable that on any supported NASs with multiple NICs. )

I'm envious of the 7 Nas's (not that I need more myself.....I'm just envious ) :-)

A final update:

After a lot of trial and error, I have managed to get the DS1019+, DS720+, and DS716+II up to 2.5GB, using a different ethernet adapter.

The DS1813++ is 10 years old with a low-powered CPU - I coaxed it up to 1.5GB, but I have decided to pension it off.

Thank you all for your help.  πŸ™‚πŸ™‚
