I am on 2Degrees 4G wireless internet and am using the supplied TP-Link MX515v modem and it looks like my printer which is LAN connected, and has been for years, is not being seen by the router and hence the rest of the network.  It was happily working with a number of different modems over the years, just not this one.  It was operating on an address in the 169 range.  I seem to have done some kind of resest so it's sitting on 0.0.0.0 which is another issue

Have you recently switched to this router?

Was the printer address setup automatically or manually?

Is the printer's MAC address blocked?

Wow... this is bringing back some memories of setting up IP addresses using multi-tap on the control panel of LaserJet printers.

Is the router giving out DHCP addresses?

Is the JetDirect card set to DHCP mode rather than Static IP mode?

Router was new to my environment at last plan change (still with 2degrees).  Had been at that fixed IP address for ever.  The router has been set to provide DHCP to the network.  I suspected a lockdown of IP address ranges but can't see where that would be set (to turn it off).  Probably made things worse as JetDirect is factory reset to 0.0.0.0 with no DHCP address.

Okie doke.  Can you check the JetDirect configuration and confirm DHCP is enabled?  You should be able to print a network configuration page from the control panel of the printer (if my dusty memory is correct).

Struggling to discover how to set the behaviour of the jet direct card when I can't browse to it especially when it doesn't have an IP address at the moment.  I should have scanned the config page to add to this conversation.

Those old JetDirect cards did not have a web interface.  Config was all from the front panel of the printer.

The ones I'm thinking of slotted into the printer, and I'm thinking of the models from the HL LaserJet 4 era.  External models that connected to the printer via a cable needed a bit of software to configure them, from memory.

How do you know it's factory reset or address is 0.0.0.0? Have you used the INFO button to print a status page?

I still think the JetDirect is set to a static address, outside of the router current LAN range.

Is is possible the router has an option to provide DHCP but you need to approve new devices in the network?

I was reading a manual for this specific model and they do have a web interface. Pretty old, as Netscape Navigator is the minimum browser supported.

We are getting off topic here, but do you remember the 1998 court case over Microsoft bundling internet explorer?

Absolutely!  And the video evidence that was doctored supposed to be a representation of the consequences of unbundling the browser.

In computing, if it’s hard to do you’re doing it wrong.

is the printer directly connected to the router via a single patch lead? Where did you see that 0.0.0.0 address?

The printer is connected by a LAN cable from the JetDirect card to a port on the modem.

Explain why you can't set IP address via the printer control panel??

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

HP Jet Direct is a Printer Server. It's not a printer. There's no control panel. It's all via a web admin. No IP address, no web admin.
