Hey folks.

Looks like my router has died. Heard a "popping" noise this morning, tried plugging it into a few other wall sockets and heard the popping noise from there as well. I'm unsure if it's just a plug thing, or the actual router. No lights went on or anything.

Anyway, looking to buy a new router today, likely would have to be from Harvey Norman/Noel Leeming/PB Tech as I'll need it today, what do you recommend? Nothing too over the top, my current one is a 2Degrees FritzBox 7560. Looking to pay $150 ish at the absolute maximum, my internet use is quite "low". Mainly browsing/Youtube/Streaming/Very light gaming. I'll be the only user using it as well, so I don't need something top of the line.

can you not just buy a new power supply unit for it?

Looks like a new plug is around $20-$30, and doesn't seem to be in stock everywhere so there's no guarantee I'd get it today either. Would rather just buy a brand new router in this instance I think.

But I suppose heading into JayCar wouldn't hurt...

What other gear do you have with 12v plug packs. I have an external hard drive that has s plug pack that shared specs with my previous router's psu.

^^Yeah I'd say try a different power supply to test if you have one around.

If you do go for a new router, do you need an all in one unit with built in WiFi? Or do you have access points?

If you dont need wifi, then I grabbed one of these recently.

https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/IPHGSM403298/Grandstream-GWN7001-Multi-WAN-Gigabit-VPN-Router-1

But dont think they have any in store at the moment, just logistics centre, so will need to be shipped.

Had a quick look around, couldn't find anything sadly. Neither in my "Tech" box

I'm fairly good with tech, but routers are just something I've never looked into. This is my current "setup", so I'm unsure what I need in all honesty! The 2D modem/router(?) connects to the Chorus box on the wall.

Edit: And yes, 100% need Wifi. I don't use Ethernet.

Several TP-Link options in the $100-$150 bracket. The Grandstream above ^^ looks decent too. Another option would be this:

https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/NETAS4652/ASUS-RT-AX52-AX1800-Dual-Band-WiFi-6-Extendable-Ro

Should do the job for you now, and these also have the option of flashing OpenWRT to them in future if you want to play around.
