right guys i have a question

at my home i have 2 computers 1 is my younger brothers and the other is my own now he has the modem in his room in which he has his pc and ps3 connected to in my room i have my xbox connected to my pc via the network port on my motherboard and bridged the two connections so if my pc aint on then i cannot connect to xbox live but my problem they now have to share the same ip address i think this may be the problem but i am trying to share my music through xbox live and tried everything on their website they asked me to do but dosent seem to work if i do a search to connect the xbox to my pc it will pick up my wee bros and not mine i have tried sharing all my music and setting up a shared network on my computer but it wont work i have windows media player 11 and tried sharing all my files on media player but it will stall for 5 mins and give up

any clue anyone

Why oh why would you be connecting it to your pc directly? that seems daft. If you have a ps3, xbox 360 etc etc then surely you can afford a cheap 5 port switch for your bedroom? it will solve the above problems.. set different ips for xbox and pc but on the same network, default gateway to your modem (router) and all will be good. Then when you search using media player 11 it will pick up your xbox if its setup right..

cos it was only my xbox that i wanted on and it worked when i connected it and besides the router is in another room that cannot be reached

2 questions though

1)why does it seem daft that i have connected it through my computer as it worked?

2) can you help me when it comes to the set up and all that because i have tried it already and it didnt seem to work and they both have two different ips

Well the main reason its daft is because you could just buy a cheap switch and it saves you the hassle of setting up ip addresses and bridging the connection via your PC.

At the moment from what i under stand you have:

Your router (in another room) connected to your PC which then connects to your xbox (like a chain).

Because of this you have had to setup ip addresses on both the computer and the xbox.

The simple solution:

Buy a switch. You can buy a cheap 4+ port network switch at many retailers for around $10-$20.

This means you can plug the cable from your modem into the switch aswell as both your PC and Xbox.

This solves both your bridging problem and the need for you to have your PC on to use xbox live.

The not so simple solution:

Well there are lots of possability's that can go here, but by the sound of it they would not be for you. There is a saying in design KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid) and it apply's here, where there is no need to make it more complicated than it already is, dont. Its just one more thing to go wrong (Especially if you do not understand what you are doing).
