I can successfully connect my PDA to my PC using USB and ActicSycn, but I am having terrible trouble trying to do teh same using Bluetooth.

I use XTNDConnect Blue Manager on my PC and I have downloaded excellent Geekzone Guide and followed the instructions. Everything seems to work, my PC and PDA happily pair together, and my Bluetooth Manager on my PDA observes a connection when I try to connect. But the connection never completes and I am left with a message on my PC saying that ActivSycn does not recognise my device.

Very frustrated! Any help appreciated.

I suppose you read this article on Bluetooth ActiveSync with XTNDConnect?

Check if you don't have any firewall software blocking the Bluetooth software or ActiveSync. In special Zone Alarm should be set to medium, NIS and Windows XP SP2 built-in firewall should have rules allowing this communication.

Also very important is to observe the COM port configuration. Check everything with the article again...

This was the article I used, and was very helpful.
I do not have a firewall (unless it is build in with Windows XP?)
My PC and PDA recognise each other and pair correctly. I am sure I have set ActiveSync to the correct COM port.
My ActiveSycn tries to connect, but times out after about 30 secs telling me "device not recognised". It seems I fall only at the last hurdle. Intensely fructrating!

Interesting - are you starting the connection from your PDA?

ActiveSync on the desktop doesn't have the ability to initiate a connection via Bluetooth. You'll have to create the first partnership via USB, then ActiveSync will be configured and after this any other connection can be wireless (even ones creating new partnerships).

I have windows XP, but only Home Edition 2002, and not SP2. I have no firewall to disable.
The PDA links happily with ActiveSync using USB, and so a partnership is already established. In fact I do not need to use bluetooth at all as the USB cable works fine, but nevertheless I have no patience for things that do not work!!
With bluetooth I initiate the link from my PDA, and my PDA tells me it has an active connection. On my PC ActiveSync is clearly trying to establish a connection, but gives up after about 30 secs telling me it can not recognise my device. This is strange as it rcognises it fine using a USB link.

strange... Perhaps the last thing to ask then is about the Bluetooth device. Is it a USB dongle, and if yes, is it connected to a USB HUB or directly to a computer port?

Also, are you using an old computer with a VIA chipset on the motherboard? These are really bad USB implementations and we had another thread where the motherboard was the problem.

I am using a USB Dongle over a USB Hub. But I have tried it also with the dongle connected directly to my PC, and same result. Note that my dongle talks to my bluetooth phone and I can use it to connect to the internet, so I do not understand why it can not talk properly to my PPC! My PC is about three years old now, and I will try and find out is it has a "VIA" chipset.
