In the hopes of setting up a wireless home network between two computers, I purchased (2) Bluetooth USB Dongles (BTU01A) and have now discovered that this connection is not as easy as I thought it would be. The installation seemed to go OK until I tried inserting a PIN code for both machines and recieved error messages stating that "Network Access is denied". I'm running Windows XP on the host computer that includes a cable broadband internet connection. My client computer is running Windows 98SE. I have installed and uninstalled software - changed setting in the network access tabs of both the local and client tabs of the software config. - changed IP address on the Win98 computer and just about anything else that I can think to do.

Other things that I have noticed:

1. The Bluetooth Access Server that was created in my network connection when I ran the software states that the "network cable is unplugged". What nework cable? Should this be disabled?

2. How do I "pair these computers? Do I create my own PIN code or is their a specific code that I don't know about? Whenever I input my code in one computer and try to input the same code in the other computer I recieve "network access denied".

Any help will be appreciated and I will provide as much detailed information as needed in order to resolve this agonizing problem.

The PIN for pairing is decided by yourself. The easiest way to pair is following this:

- make sure the computer can be seen by any other devices (right-click the Bluetooth icon in the system tray, and check the tab Accessibility
- after doing a search, in one of the computers (only one!) right-click the icon corresponding to the other device and select PAIR
- Enter any PIN in the next dialog, and rush to the other computer to confirm the PIN

About the network cable unplugged... It could be that your Bluetooth configuration currently is set to diasble the LAN service. Have a look in the Services tab and check the status of the Network Access service.

Thank you so much for your reply. I think I might be putting the cart before the horse. I followed your instructions and inserted a PIN (from my host computer) to the client. I then rushed to the client and inserted the same PIN in order to get a confirmation and I still received "network access denied". Question: Where should I be looking on my client to determine whether or not the PIN has been confirmed? Should I be inserting a PIN into the client in order to get a confirmation?

I feel that the real problem is with my Bluetooth network config. I find it to be disabled even when it’s supposed to be enabled. I have screen shots of what the dialogue boxes look like in the enabled and disabled state but I can't seem to paste them into my reply. I will be happy to email them to you if it would help in diagnosing the problem. Should I be showing a IP address along with a DNS address in my Bluetooth LAN Server - Internet TCP? Should my Internet connection be shared through the Local LAN or Bluetooth LAN in order to share the internet with my client computer?

Thanks... The "cable unplugged" message can show when the Network Access service is disabled. You can check it by right-clicking the Bluetooth icon in the system tray, selecting Configuration and moving to the "Service" tab. Look at the status of your Network Access Service.

If this is enabled you might have to remove and install the Bluetooth software again. Once the network adapter shows working ok, then you can try the LAN access.

Once again I thank you for trying to help me with my problem. Unfortunately, the problem still exist and my frustration level is being tested. After uninstalling and installing the software (BTW Version 1.3.2.7 - Windows XP) several times, I'm still recieving the dialog box that states "cable unplugged". This dialog will appear as the drivers are being downloaded - along with the symbol that denotes a "network disconnection" in my systems tray. When the download is complete, it shows that the install was successful. When I open the "services" tab it shows my Local Network as being enabled and my Bluetooth Nework as "cable unplugged" and a red X.

I have tried everything I can think of. The dongle was inserted after the software was downloaded. I made sure that only my Local Network adapter was listed before I began a new download of the software. I have been following some of the suggestion that you have given to "Steve - my computer want pair".

I thought this was suppose to be simple. Where is good old "plug and play" when you need it.

I know it can be very frustrating, but each PC is different and things are not easy.

One last thing I can ask about this: how much load is your CPU running at? In a couple of times, while recording a CD, ActiveSync connected, downloading a file (all at the same) my CPU rocketed to 100% usage and I notice my Bluetooth adapter simply going to disconnected state.

As soon as the CPU usage went down a little, the adapter "reconnected".

It seems that sometime the BT service gives way to other more CPU hungry processes. Could this be the case?

Just hit CTRL-ALT-DEL, start the Task Manager and let us know what you have there.

That's the last thing I can think of, really.

My CPU usage is fluctuating between I% and 7%. Hopes this gives you some kind of clue.

Patricku, have you solved this problem? The "network cable unplugged" shows when you have the Network Service set to "Allow other devices to create a private network with this computer".

If you change it to be like in the screenshot below, the "network cable unplugged" should go away:

The "network cable unplugged" message is just telling you that there's no active connections. As soon as the client computer connects using the service you'll see this going away. And when it disconnects the message will come back. Unless you change the configuration to the screen above.

I have the same problem running winxp, I have loaded the bluetooth and software but it cant seem to find services. This computer was not part of a network (was standalone), But I ran the network wizard, and I think thats done. I still however cant resolve the The "network cable unplugged"

In your recommnedation you said to "The "network cable unplugged" shows when you have the Network Service set to "Allow other devices to create a private network with this computer".

If you change it to be like in the screenshot below, the "network cable unplugged" should go away:"

I cant even detrmine how to bring up this configuration dialog box. My bluetooth config is different, looks like a typical TCIP config box.

Help, maybe a pictorial walk through ...please

wt123, first we have to find your services.

You say you can't see any service, right? If you right click the Bluetooth icon on your System Tray, and select Advanced Configuration, change to Services and you don't haver anything in the list, then we have to fix this.

If this is the case there are two ways of fixing it:

  • reinstall Windows XP and install the Bluetooth software again
  • create a new user with Administrator rights, remove the Bluetooth software and install it again. The services should then be visible to everyone.

Once you've sorted this bit, we can carry on to mke the computers find each other.

wt123 you confirm then that services are now visible on the Advanced Configuration, and that your LAN Access services is configured as "Allow other devices to access the Internet/LAN..."?

If this is the case then your other step should be reinstall Windows and then Bluetooth. It's something with your original configuration. Like other software/hardware conflicts may exist with a specific computer configuration.

Is this thread dead now? I am having the exact same problem and a reinstall of everything does not do the trick. Has anyone found a solution to this "network cable unplugged" problem yet?

    Frustration factor 9.9.

    To recap.

New install of XP and BT drivers.
Local services in the BT configuration menu are set to enabled (auto)
ICS is set to share on the bluetooth network
Network access properties is set to: "allow other devices to access the internet/lan from this computer

In addition to that I am able to:

    1. See my iPaq 1945 via bluetooth (it is listed in "My Bluetooth Places")
    2. See my computer from the iPaq (I can connect - but do nothing)

This leads me to conclude it is still a configuration issue on the XP machine. I have tried setting up FTP and lan/WAN access neither will get past recognizing the bluetooth devices (ie. no real network connection)

    Please help

    Jon

jkstraw, what drivers are you using? 1.2, 1.3 or newer? And what maker?

Not that a solution is known, but certainly old drivers will not help. The current ones are 1.3 (except DLINK with 1.4).

Hi Thanks for the quick reply,

    Drivers are v. 1.3.2.7

I am using the same device as the original poster, that is a InstantPAN BTU01A BT dongle.

    Cheers,

    Jon
