Hey everyone--I'm new to this forum and this whole Bluetooth thing, so perhaps you can help me out!

I would like to use a bluetooth wireless headset so that I can use NetMeeting and Internet teleconferencing. I own an IBM ThinkPad A31p with a bluetooth daughter card (or BDC), listed in the Windows XP Device Manager "IBM Integrated Bluetooth." I have been reading a lot of the posts on this forum, but haven't quite figured out how to get Bluetooth Audio (via the Headset profile) working with my device.

The BDC that came with my computer uses a CSR chipset. The most recent drivers that IBM released for it are Widcomm 1.2-based.

IBM also has software called Integrated Bluetooth II software, which is to be used with its combo Bluetooth+modem device in new T40 and X31 laptops. This is Widcomm 1.3-based.

The version 1.2 software doesn't have the headset profile. The version 1.3 software does. I also tried the Bluetake 1.3 software from the Bluetake website, which also has the headset profile. HOWEVER, upon installing the 1.3 software, the Widcomm driver claims that I am using an unlicensed version of the driver and software, so I can't access any Bluetooth functions. It prompts me for a license key. So, I can't use the 1.3 software. I've been reading reports on this forum about how to deal with this case (edit inf files, swap some old files in and out, use particular drivers-which-no-longer-are-available-for-download). However, none of the info I've found on the 'net fully explains it. Can someone please explain how to get the Widcomm 1.3 stack working for a generic CSR-based bluetooth device?

Thanks in advance for your help! After I confirm that I can *use* a headset with this computer, I'll select a headset. Suggestions welcome. ;-)

I'm in the same boat except I want to use the HID profile.

Have you spoken with IBM? Do have any idea whether they are planning on upgrading their drivers?

I spoke with them in February and was told they would update the widcomm stack in May. So much for that!

Thanks,
Aaron

One of our users, Bluetoothmaster, posted a link to his article on how to have a widcomm stack working with other brands of BT adapters. Have a look in our Bluetooth forum, it's one of the top items there.

The HID profile is on version 1.4. Some have this released already (DLINK), some are working on this (TDK, Belkin, Bluetake).

I was able to get HID mouse support (and presumably headset as this is now listed as an option, although I haven't used that) working on a ThinkPad A31p by getting and installing bthwxp1o.exe (aka 'Version 1.4.2.18 - IBM Integrated Bluetooth II Software for Windows 98 SE/2000/XP') from:

ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/bthwxp1o.exe

Note that this is a self-extracting file that extracts to c:\drivers\win\bdcact. After extracting, you must go to that directory and run the setup program there. After installing this on your A31p, when you try to activate the Bluetooth you will get the 'invalid license.dat' error, and it will prompt for the location of a valid license.dat file. Download the package tpbteba.exe (aka 'Version 1.4.2.18 - Bluetooth daughter card (BDC) software for Windows 98SE/Me/2000/XP') from:

ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/tpbteba.exe

Again, this a self-extracting file that extracts to c:\drivers\win\bdc. Then point the software to this alternate c:\drivers\win\bdc\license.dat, cross your fingers, and all should be well.

Tried this out and all works well except for the licence thingie. You say you got it working, did you get a mouse og keyboard functioning at all? If so, please, how did you do it?

I did this on 2 separate machines, and got a bluetooth mouse working on both machines.

Did you extract the license.dat file from the 'tpbteba.exe' archive? And, when it complains about not having a license, did you point it to open that license.dat file? That is all I needed to do, and it no longer complained about not having a license.

Yep. that's what I did. It kept complaining about the license file not being valid.

I had the same problem as you with the complaint about not allowed to install an older version when I tried to point to the other lisence.dat file.

Go to: http://www.jonsguides.com/bt/en/index.html

Follow the instructions - worked for me. Mostly... Ran into 2 hiccoughs:

1) during execution of the setup.exe in the bdcact directory, I got an error trying to install BTW. Continued the install, and then executed the install icon (BTW.msi) in the same directory directory and that seemed to do it.

2) My computer wouldn't let me log into windows in safe mode (not sure why). Workaround was to kill the BTTray task - that made it possible to patch the first two files. I then copied the wtapi file to a new location, patched it there, renamed the original, and put the patched one back.

Am now using the BlueTake bluetooth mouse with no problems on my a31p. Only complaint is the buttons are too noisy for discrete use during a boring board meeting ;-) (Hint: use the buttons on the touch pad ;-)

Hi all,

I read your post since I'm trying to get a HID BT mouse up and running on my A31p as well.
As for thorir, my efforts were not as successfull as I hoped. I installed the BT II software and it ciomplained about the license file. I pointed it to the license file from the tbteba.exe archive and it complained about installing an older version over a newer one.

So I followed the last hope: LongHairedHippyFreak's link to jonsguides.com. Unfortunaltely, it seems that Jon had to remove the interesting parts of his guide because of the new widcomm-owner. Does anybody have the old description saved somewhere or knows another location were I can find it?

I need a) a working license.dat or b) some other way to enable the HID prfile for my BDC card.

Thanks in advance!

Actually, I believe that I have the A31p's IBM Integrated Bluetooth module working! I am using Windows XP SP2, and am using the built-in Bluetooth stack provided by Microsoft.

After installing SP2, most likely your IBM Integrated Bluetooth module will NOT function. The reason is because in the Windows\Inf\bth.inf file, there is a line that reads:

IBM Integrated Bluetooth= BthUsb, USB\Vid_04BF&Pid_0318

in the section [IBM.NT.5.1].

I added the following line to that section:
IBM Integrated Bluetooth= BthUsb, USB\Vid_04BF&Pid_0310

which corresponds to the actual PID that your Bluetooth module supports. You may need to restart the computer or refresh the device list; in any case, get Windows XP SP2 to update the device drivers for the Bluetooth module after saving that change to bth.inf. You then should have a fully-working Bluetooth module that works with headsets and HID-compliant devices!

SeanTek,

that was the best answer ever! It works flawlessly with my Bluetak BT500 Mouse and I'm not dependend on the Widcomm-Stuff anymore. Thanks a lot for posting this hint!

S.
