Total Newbie - apologies up front from the States.

I read the thread on PPC/WIFI/Sandisk and it seems a mixed bag of success and frustration. My challenge is being so new to this arena I'm still learning the capabilities of the technology in my hands. (like I said above....)

I have an IPAQ2210 and have inherited a SanDisk 128meg wifi card. I have configured it according to the mfg specs and drivers seem to be working fine. I have connections set to Work and the Wireless network settings to connect to the Internet. Still learning the toggle setting required so haven't noticed fully if it keeps switching off Internet and Work. Partly I'm not sure what it's *supposed* to be to be successful at this. I have WiFiFoFum running and when I sit at the Harbor Steps in Seattle (a mini metro park surrounded by business and apts) Fofum scans and finds 50 or so possible connections-some with WEP some not, the software reveals MAC and SSID and if I select one from the PPC Configure Wireless Networks Screen, it connects to it and I get the double-arrow symbol up top implying(?) that the devices are talking with eachother, yet if I try to connect to a web page via Internet Explorer, I get a message that "The Page I'm looking for can't be found".

So, with that rambling prelude, I'll pose my questions:

  • 1) Am I high?

  • 2) Am I trying to get the PPC to do something it doesn't have the physical capability to do with the hardware given?

  • and the biggie:

  • 3) When the double-arrow symbol *is* present, what are the capabilities of that connection?

There's so much out here/there on what goes wrong and how to fix it, I'm still trying to figure out how I could use the hardware/software to advantage.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hey, I know the Harbor Steps - been there last year...

Back to your questions, when the arrows are showing you're connected. If you're not seeing a page on Pocket Internet Explorer it could be two things: first, there are two configuration files with strange names and sometimes one can delete these files by mistake. To recreate then open File Explorer, browse to \Windows and tap welcome.exe to run it. Soft reset the Pocket PC and try again.

Next it could simply be a Wireless Access Point that is not properly configured. The best thing to check this is by downloading VxUtil and using it to check the information about your connection - IP, DNS, gateway. If this info seems correct, then you can use VxUtil to PING a host by name (www.wired.com) and IP Address (209.202.221.21). Both point to the same server. If pinging by name fails but IP Address works, then your Pocket PC is not getting a DNS configuration from the Access Point. Try another Access Point then.
