Hi,

I am trying to talk from my iPAQ 5450 to another Bluetooth-enabled device programmatically, using VB.NET. I have a program which works fine between my PDA and my PC, using the serial port (COM 1). I have modified the program to use ports 5 and 8, which the BLuetooth Manager says are the ports for serial comms in Bluetooth. When I open the outbound port on 1 iPAQ, it correctly discovers the other one, which asks me to authorise the connection, and vice versa when I run the prog on the 2nd iPAQ - but that's it! I can't seem to send or receive anything. The program works fine with my iPAQ and PC via a serial link.

Can anyone help, please?

No one else has jumped in here. So I'll tell you about my experience with Bluetooth and serial GPS. I'm not a programer, I can't help with that.

On my 5455, going to the Bluetooth manager and first tapping on the Bluetooth GPS icon, and starting it seems to be nessary. Then I open the program that wants to talk to my GPS, and launch it. If nessary set the port to COM8: and start the units. At this point I'm taken to a screen where I can pick Bluetooth Icons that have already been setup. I must tap the icon, I already started, (very important once only and then wait If I double tap, my unit seems to lock up) The 5455 will then open the connection, and start using it.

My understanding is if the program starts the connection on the 5455, it will use COM8: for everything. COM5: is not used at all.

The Bluetooth serial connections are client and server type like. The one creating the connection will have to open the Outbound port, and the one receiving the connection will have to open and listen on the Inboud port.

Have you changed the program according to the roles? Perhaps a new configuration like a drop list with "What is the function of this program"?

Hmm like I stated I'm not a programmer. But that does not appear to be true. I know for the GPS programs I have they are only using one port when talking to my GPS. And they appear to only use one when talking to the Bluetooth gps also. But then like I said, I'm not a programmer, so I could be wrong. I know that 2 ports seems to be what the Bluetooth people want you to do.

Yep, but in this case the GPS is the server, and the program will use the client (outbound) port from the Pocket PC.

In the case here one Pocket PC will be the server and the other the client. You could try High Point Software for some info. He's around here sometimes.

are you saying, then, that the PDA initiating the connection will send AND receive on port 8 and the other will use port 5 for both?

That's how I understand it. But I can't have the final word - I don't have how to test it. As I said, try contacting Tim at High Point for more information on this...

Thanks, I have had a look at the Bluetooth FAQs on the HighPoint site and now I'm even more confused. They say much the same as you, but specify COM 7 as the port to use for the client. But when I do that, it says "Port already in use or is not available".

AAAGH!!
