I red with interest the previous thread about installing a bluetooth device with XP SP2, and also the article "Bluetooth ActiveSync Guide for Windows XP Service Pack 2" at http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?contentid=3163#comments
but the pbm is, when I reach the step "unplug the bluetooth device and plug it back in", Windows does not recognise there's a new device (doesn't look for driver either of course). During all the instalation procedure I've tried, the pbm always is the same, I get messages asking me to plug in the dongle even though it's already in, and I can never complete the installation, as the installation programme ends up sayin, no "bluetooth device detected". I've tried to get Windows to detect it, tried to find it in a list of devices (it's never listed), tried to install a new COM Port, still doesn't work.
Of course, the first thing I did was to install the software that came with the device, same pbm of "no detection"). This device worked fine with Win 2000 by the way.

Can you help please? I'm desperate.

PS Although I hate SP2 for all the pbms it's causing me with my bluetooth and other things(IE 6 doesn't work properly any more), I'd like a solution that doesn't include going back... nor changing computers :-)

Is this device plugged to a USB port or USB HUB? These don't like HUB because of the power requirements. Also, could it be a problem with the Bluetooth adapter? Have you tested it in another computer lately?

Could it be a problem with the USB ports on your computer? Old motherboards based on the VIA chipset have great problems with USB.

Hi

Thanks for your reply!
Well it is plugged in through a USB Hub, but it's always been (under Windows 2000), and yes, I've tested it with a different computer (laptop), it was detected straight away, and I managed to install it (system was Windows 98 on that one).
Thing is, my other usb ports are being used (mouse, printer).
I suspect there's something with my XP, because I also have pbms with my internet browser, but I don't know what to do??

What do you think? any suggestions?

Can't believe it, it was a brilliant suggestion!! I've unplugged my printer and plugged in the bluetooth device instead, instantly recognised as a bluetooth device!!
I'm so happy, well it's not over yet, I'm gonna try and make it work now. I'll keep you posted!
Thanks again.
K

Hi again,

Well, my bluetooth device works now, and I could connect my phone. So it seems it was the hub's fault.
But I have a different pbm now, I don't have a printer anymore... ;-) and if I plug it onto the hub, it's not detected... well, at least I know the source of my problem...

Thanks a lot for your suggestion, that was of great help!
Any idea how I can make my XP work with the hub (which worked with the same computer under Windows 2000)?

Nice... I bought a second USB 2.0 card (really cheap these days) adding another four ports to my computer, instead of using a USB HUB. Much better and don't give problems like HUBs.

Hi again,

Sorry, couldn't reply sooner, I was on holiday (in old Blighty). Thanks for the advice, I'm going to change computers fairly soon anyway, so I'll get lots of USB ports on the new one! But if I should need some more in the future, I'll go for the USB card then.

Thanks for all the cool advice!

K
