... or the sad story of a little knowledge being a dangerous thing. (You need a forum icon of crying!!).

Please help! I am in dire need of some (hopefully) easy-ish help.

I got BT working using an MSI dongle and IPAQ 3970. I could ActiveSync and even browse the internet.

However, internet browsing always timed-out after about 10 mins. Looking at these forums made me think that ZoneAlarm was the problem. However, instead of doing anything about that, I saw a link for downloading Widcomm drivers for BT (the following version: 1.3.1.46). Stupidly, I installed this over the top of my normal (working) standard BT application on my PDA.

This set-up worked for about 15 minutes then refused to ever work again. Basically both my desktop and my IPAQ decided they couldn't see each other. So, I thought I would uninstall the Widcomm app from my handheld.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAGH. Of course, it had overwritten the original BT application and now my IPAQ is bluetoothless. I am ashamed and embarrassed to admit that I have no idea how to restore it, as the disc I got with my IPAQ just has stupid add-on programs that I never use.

If anyone has some step-by-step advice about how to restore my old setup (ie the original version of BT - or even a patched version) then I would be truly, truly grateful.

I am tearing my hair out because now I don't even have BT activesync, just normal USB stuff. Thank you for reading.

I haven't installed this update, but other users reported the same experience. I also read this update actually just copy the files to your RAM only (like tha MS Reader update).

Make a good backup (make it two) and do a hard reset on your H3970. Let us know if it's working ok after this.

Well, eventually I have my old lovely BT back! It was actually a big case of trial and error, because although the BT icon re-appeared after a hard reset, once I restored the backup, it disappeared again!! Ended up having to omit the registry backup, so has been a case of tweaking and re-installing some of my apps, but such is life. Anyway, connection is working now, which is a relief, although one of my other apps is now totally refusing to co-operate. *Sigh* Thanks for your suggestion - it was the only way to go, I think!
