Copied from Widcomm release notes:

BTW 1.2 Features
Object code libraries for Bluetooth Spec 1.1 compliant Windows protocol stack and profiles
q Generic Access Profile
q Serial Port Profile
q Service Discovery App Profile
q Fax Profile
q LAN Access Profile
q Generic Object Exchange Profile
q Object Push Profile
q File Transfer Profile
q Dial-up Network Profile
q Synchronization Profile
q Mini-port drivers to support WIDCOMM’s USB, PCMCIA and serial reference design
q User interface, My Bluetooth Places, System Tray, and Control Panel. The user interface
manages applications, security, authentication, and other Bluetooth devices
q Extensive documentation that exposes and details Bluetooth wireless technology application
programming interface (API); APIs enable the creation of custom Bluetooth enabled
applications
q BTServerSpyLite test tool to trace stack operations
q Complete test plans and test results are provided

BTW 1.3 Features
BTW 1.3 is the latest BTW release and it incorporates all the features in BTW 1.2 plus:
q Audio Gateway/Headset Profile
q Personal Area Networking Profile
q Hardcopy Cable Replacement Profile
q Bluetooth Setup Wizards enabling easier connections to various Bluetooth services
q Quick Connection Wizards for faster connection to Bluetooth devices
q Radio On & Off controls from the System Tray

BTW 1.4 Features
BTW 1.4 is the latest BTW release and it incorporates all the features in BTW 1.3 plus:
q Human Interface Device Profile
q Fast Software Install

So according to this BTW 1.4 brings very little in the way of new features. Assuming the HID support is mainly of interest to people who want to use BT mice and keyboards then I assume 1.3 is adequate for most peoples needs. I assume 1.4 will also incorporate bug fixes etc. but will most people need this?

Is this why not many dongle suppliers are releasing 1.4?

Cheers
Dave R

As a quick follow up question:

do most of the devices which ship with the Widcomm stack have all the profiles implemented?

I have seen on other threads here that M$ only offer a very limited subset.

Some hardware will not allow the use of some features - for instance the Belkin F8T001 (at least the old model) will not support voice gateway.

Yes, MS only supports Dial up and HID.

HID also supports joysticks I think (to be confirmed).
