We have a Netgear DGN2000 which we generally use with wireless. It's been working fine since we got it some months back. However, for the last two days, the speed over wireless has been terrible. When I ran Speedtest over wireless, it eventually came back with 0.21Mb/s and when I connected directly to it and ran the same test, I got a speed of 14.4Mb/s.

The machines running off it are a combination of Windows XP (SP1, SP2 and SP3), Server 2003, Vista Professional and Windows 7 Professional. Nothing has been changed on any of these computers and nothing has been changed on the DGN2000.

The wireless is set up to use WPA and I've also set it up to only allow specific MAC addresses to access it. Using the diagnostics on the DGN2000 doesn't show anything and only our computers are attached to it, so that at least rules out the connection being hijacked.

Any pointers on whet else I can check or any other tests I can perform?

Have you tried changing channels? There could be other people nearby using the same channel which could affect speeds. There could also be interference from 2.4GHz phones.

Well, I've now spent the last couple of hours cycling through every channel on every mode and am no further forward. In some cases, the machines can't even see the wireless connection. There aren't any 2.4GHz phones in our building, but I suppose it may be from one of the other businesses nearby.

As for wireless signals, there are four showing up in addition to our own. Of these, one has a signal strength of two bars, the rest one bar. One of the one bar ones is new as I've never noticed it before.

Ours shows as five bars, which is not surprising as its only half a metre away, but with wireless my latest speedtest returned 0.14Mb/s compared to a wired speed of 18.19Mb/s.

Is it possible that it could be the router itself, and if so, is there any way of testing it? I could take it home, but the boss may not be too happy with that suggestion! I have an old one at home which I can dig out and bring in next week and see if we still get the same problem. At least that way, we can identify where the problem lies.

Well, things have now being working for over a week now. I still see all the other wireless routers around the place and am back to using my original channel settings. The one thing I did notice when playing around was that the base of the router was red hot. I wondered if that could be the cause so switched it off over the new year break and now also have it supported off the desk to let the air under it. Since then, it has worked fine. Just as well I didn't have it lying on the carpet on the floor.
