Hey all,

I'm at my wit's end with this and hope someone might have an idea what in the world is going on. I'm trying to add a Bluetooth USB adapter to my laptop so that I can connect to my Nokia 3650. But I haven't even gotten that far yet. The first adapter I tried was from Hawking Technology. It appeared to install fine, and asked me to enter my configuration settings such as my display name and what not. I entered them and thought everything was fine. Only, it would never remember my settings. I would check them right after saving them, and it was almost as if I'd just installed the drivers. I'd even tried re-installing drivers and updating. Nothing worked. A call to their tech support didn't help any, so I just returned it to Amazon.

Second chance - I went with the Belkin F8T003. The same problem is happening, leading me to believe it's something with my computer. Their tech support doesn't know, Dell doesn't know, so I'm kind of stuck. I'm running Windows XP Pro on a Dell Inspiron 2600. Any other information you might need, feel free to ask. Just looking for some suggestions. Belkin thought it could be my antivirus software, but I disabled it during the installation. No help.

It's something with your computer... Things to check:

since you're using Windows XP Pro, are you sure your user has Administrator rights?

the profile information for your user may be corrupted. One trick that worked with others is to create a new user with administrator rights and use this new user to remove the Bluetooth software and install it again. It should work after this, even for the other users.

If the second item works for you, you should really consider reisntalling your Windows XP, because it might be causing problems with other applications - or it'll someday.

I'm happy and I'm sad...

The second option worked, but now what do I do? When you say re-install, am I going to have to lose my files? Sorry if it's a dumb question, but I'm still kind of new to this stuff. I'm used to the Internet, not the hardware itself!!

If it worked you can just keep on like it's now - but you know something on your Windows configuration is not 100%.

Reinstalling probably means making a backup of all your data (including favorites), plus any other downloads, making sure you have all the original programs to install after and then reinstall Windows. I mean a fresh install, not on top of the current.

You'll have to use a backup software and of course write to CD, because I believe you'll probably have some stuff there.

It's sad. I've done this once, and my installation took three days - too many things to install, patches, Windows Updates, Office Updates, etc...

What some people do is to install Windows, Office and other programs and then create an image CD of the base system. In case of need just restore from that CD - much quicker. But still, creating this will take time.

What I do is a full backup of my data every month (10 CD), and I have five CDs that I used daily (rotating one a day) to backup the folders changed more frequently.

Well, it works as such under the new Admin account I created, but it doesn't seem to work still in the original account that I have. I guess for the time being, I'll just have to switch over to that account when I want to use it?
