Hey!

Okay so, in the household we have 1 laptop and 1 PC. We currently are on dial up and are wanting to make the move to Wireless (Telecom *Shudder*). Laptops all good as it has built in wifi but with the PC we were told (I think! Hah) at PB tech that we would require a USB dongle/ USB network adapter to be able to use wireless internet. The computer is on the opposite side of the lounge to the phone jack and do not want a cords so is dongle the way to go? We don't want the PC to run internet through the laptop or vv.We are wanting to be able to use either if the other is not in use if that makes sense ? Then theres the decision of which type of wireless router and Dongle to get! *note PB Tech dude tried to sell us the most expensive Belkin brand as it had like 30 in stock hah.

Argh, Please help us! :)

If its in the same room any Wireless network card or dongle should work well enough, stick to brands like netgear, linksys belkin or the like.
Something like a D-Link DWA-125 would do the trick.

For an all in one unit that does the ADSL, network switch and wireless access point duties I recommend the:

Dynalink RTA 1025W (or slightly newer version 1025WE)

For the USB wireless adapter for the PC just about any will do the job, have used the TP Link without problems before:

As an FYI if you're signing up to Telecom I think they'll give you a free Thomson Wireless Modem so you only need the adaptor for your PC. The modem / router is fairly basic but it does the trick for most people.

And it's white ... if you like that sort of thing.

Cheers everyone. Telecom are not giving away free wireless modems at the moment but $100 Thomson ones instead of usual $199.

Yes Telecom are only giving out the Thomson ST536 for free at the moment (adsl modem, single network port, no wireless).

However when you sign up for $100 you can get the Thomson TG585 which is an adsl modem, 4 port network switch and wireless access point.

I guess you could save $10-20 getting the Thomson from Telecom over the Dynalink I mention above.

I think the Dynalink is the better option because the Thomsons are known to have a few quirks with their NAT implementation (affects Steam and Xbox Live etc) but they are pretty close.
