would it be possible to link 2 computers over 1000 and also have both connected to internet seperatly?

eg. computer 1 has 2 NIC 1 going to computer 2 over cat6 and the other going to router.
computer 2 has 1 NIC conected to computer 1 and also a wireless adapter to connect to router.

I like the speed boost for transferring large files but also do not want both computers to be on just so i can use internet. If that makes sense?

It might be possible. You'd need to set up local IP addresses for the network cards that are connected directly.

I'd suggest getting a gigabit switch instead. Plug both PC's and the router into the switch. You'll get 1000Mbit/s between the PC's and both PC's will be able to connect to the router.

A 5 or 8-port gigabit switch should be fairly cheap these days.

A gigabit switch which joins your modem and two computers. Your two computers will connect to it at 1gbit and the modem at 100mbit. So data transfers will be fast, and internet will still be limited to whatever comes down the dsl.

I agree with ray and mich a gigabit nic is the way to go i have 3 PC's all connected to my gig switch aswell as the router they all get an IP automatically which i then made static so that each PC has the same IP every boot.. file transfers are all done at 1 gbps between us and the router is connected at 100mbps / 14.6mbps (ADSL2+)

yea thought it might be possible to save some money but oh well the mrs is going to do her nut again :)

If it's just 2 PC's then you could use a cat5e cross-over ethernet cable between the 2 pc's, should work.

PC1
- NIC #1 cat5e network cable plugged into your router, gets ip address like 192.x.x.x automatically from the router
- NIC #2 cat5e network crossover network cable (or normal straight through cable with crossover adapter) plugged into PC2 NIC, manually set ip address 10.0.0.1

PC2
- WIC (wireless) connection to your router, gets ip address like 192.x.x automatically from the router
- NIC other end of the cable from PC1, set ip address manullay 10.0.0.2

Forgot to mention once it's set-up if you'll be able to use the 10.x address eg: On PC2 access PC1:

\\10.0.0.1\
\\10.0.0.1\MySharedFolder\
etc

.. and on PC1 access PC2

\\10.0.0.2\
\\10.0.0.2\MySharedFolder\
etc

* Replace MySharedFolder with whatever shared folders you actually have seutp.

Assuming both PC's already have gbit NICs, you can pickup cheap gige switches for ~$55..
Since your DSL router isn't likely to do jumbo frames and isnt gigabit anyway, something like http://www.pbtech.co.nz/index.php?item=SWHTPL1007 should work. I've got an 8 port version of that and I do about ~400-500mbit. Which is still 4-5x faster than 100mbit, so it sufficies :)
