Dongle: MSI
PPC: HP1940
Desktop: XP
Router: Origo (Conexant 4 Port)

Following the guide on this site I changed my TCP/IP settings on my desktop from 'Obtain an IP address automatically' to the suggested addresses (192.168.2.45 etc). But now my internet connection seems to have been lost. Setting the settings back again restores the connection.

I have read about a bit and know it may be something to do with my router's IP address. How do I go about confirming this and what can I do about it?

Or is my problem something quite different. I have used the same PPC and BT dongle on a different computer (at work) and got ICS sharing working fine.

Thanks for your help!

192.168.2.45 is my computer's address here... I might have to change the images and remove all references to addresses.

What you have to do is:

  • If your computer is set to "Obtain address" leave it as it is. Only change it if the address your computer receives is in the range required by ICS.
  • If planning to changing the address then you have to check all your network settings, including DHCP server (which may be a router, or another computer) to make sure you'll not change things that will make network access stop working .

By changing the address to 192.168.2.45 on this computer you might have it now on a completely different subnet, not visible to your router or other computers.

    Oh. Silly me.

Right, I've got a little bit vurther, but now when I try using PIE it asks for me for a username and password for Network Log On.

Actually, the same thing happens when I try to connect to the internet via my T610 mobile.

Where am I supposed to find these usernames & passwords?

    Thanks again!

Good to know it's all go now. In essence the other guide you mention is the same as our pages - except different screenshots (for Windows XP).
