A friend of mine has just got a new broadband plan... but seeing as it was the only broadband option available it comes with huge overage charges. In fact $1.10/MB! (I was shocked too!)

Anyway.. seeing as this is the case I was wanting to put on some piece of software that can limit the amount of data she can use in a month to ensure that she doesnt go over the limit. I was hoping for a piece of software that I could simply set a data limit for between the billing period (its a month if that helps) and it simply resets at the beginning of the next month. It would be preferable if it gave you some kind of notification of when you had used your data (whether that be a notice from the task tray or a message when you open the internet application) but it is not necessary. If it also warned when you were approaching your linit it would also be handy but is not necessrey again. Being able to check the data throughput total for the month would also be convienent. The programme needs to include data for ALL downloads/uploads that go through the computer (e.g updates, email)... so in other words the total usage.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Get a different plan or ISP, with that one your just asking for trouble.
Most ISP don't have such outrageous chargers and normally slow your connection to 64kbps instead of charging you more. Also ISP's charge between $1 and $2 per GB that 10c or 20c per MB.

$1.10/MB sounds like it's a mobile broadband plan and not a fixed line service.
I don't know of any software that can monitor and them limit your connection easily.
There is a lot of software out there that can monitor your usage though but it's up to the user to keep an eye on it.

Perpaid mobile data might be better as you wont get a bill shock.

What ISP is it? Something like TUC is great.

Monitoring the traffic in/out of the PC isn't reliable as it's not what your ISP is billing you for.

As she lives rurally she was left with the only option of satellitle... It is with Inzone Corp (Turopaki Communications). This was pretty much the only option available and one of the only ISP's that could offer her service due to her location.

So she cant really change ISP and all of the plans offered come with the same overage charge.

Any other ideas?

Inzone Corp (Turopaki Communications) - A satellitle option. Roughly how much data is it 'normal' for your ISP to charge you for extra than you have had go through your computer? - Could I set the data limit on the software a bit lower to be on the safe side.

Thanks

How is the Cell phone coverage out there, it maybe cheaper.

From what the inzone website says about costs, which isn't much.
http://www.inzonecorp.co.nz/services/Frequently+Asked+Questions.html#cost
But it says "Our sales team will work to tailor a solution to meet your needs cost efficiently and effectively." So you could ask them to slow or stop service once you have used all your monthly cap.

Other ISP that have satellite coverage
http://www.rivernet.co.nz/satellite.html 1GB data $25
http://www.iconz.net/internet/satellite
http://www.farmside.co.nz/satellite.html
http://www.bigfrog.co.nz/Bigfrog%20-%20Plans.html

If you have good mobile phone service out there, then a mobile data plan may work out better.

Where she lives she has NO 3G coverage.... Ill give Inzone Corp a call to see if they can stop service after the data limit has been reached. I doubt they would slow service as its satellitle... I havent ever come across a satellitle ISP that slowed service... But it cant hurt to ask.

Thanks for your help... Will let you know how i get on.

Where does she live? Might be able to think of some alternatives you don't know about.

I think youll be struggling to find any other service... Satellite was the only option... But not to be negative... It would be awesome if you did find something else!

She lives in the rural back part of Havelock North, Hawke's Bay. Behind Mt Erin and to the side of Kahuranaki. Down a road called McKenzie Road that comes of Kahuranaki Road.

Id be really interested in anything you can find!

Hi Starplay

I'm commenting as a director of Rivernet Ltd which is a reseller of Rural Inzone satellite service.
Please ask your friend to recheck the overage charges, I think you'll find they are $0.10 (plus GST) per 1Mb not $1.10.

The data meter on the Inzonecorp website will show all data transferred across the circuit including updates to the satellite equipment. This is taken into account and deducted when the monthly invoice is generated.

I use netwox...it's small and does everything you want, best of all it's free. You can set it to monitor all computers on the network from one pc as well as ignoring traffic on the lan. It will warn you when you've hit whatever data allocation you set...it's the best one I've found.

It's been very accurate when checked against what my provider actually bills me for.

Hope it helps!

Vodafone might have extended coverage other there. http://www.vodafone.co.nz/coverage/
at mackenzie Road Havelock North, New Zealand

But XT looks a bit patchy. http://www.telecom.co.nz/content/mobile/0,10913,206118-204558,00.html?link=rdt

Still 10c/MB ($102/GB) is completive with the mobiles. (better than $1126/GB)
What speeds do you get from the Sat?

Thats good to know. I was horrified when I found out it was $1.10/MB although that is definatly what Inzone said as I called them for her to find out. Must have been a CSR that just didnt know...?

Is there any way to get 'live' or recent data usage information... As oposed to waiting until after midnight to find out the entire days usage as it would be really convienent.
